<winter> I think I found a bug, but I'm unsure where to begin with regards to debugging it. So, when I launch Sway for the first time after a reboot, the DPI looks OK. However, every time I quit and relaunch Sway after this, the DPI is very different. I'm not changing anything, all I'm doing is exiting and relaunching Sway. The logs don't show anything of
<winter> value sadly, and this is using Asahi's Mesa. Is this more likely a Sway/wlroots issue, or an (Asahi) Mesa one?

<skippypaws> hi all, i'm wondering if there was some kind of hardware-related issue where the machine would start emitting an audible screeching noise that would leak through the headphone jack - it seems to correlate to stress on the cpu, but i've just upgraded to asahi-edge and it doesn't seem to happen anymore
skippypaws has quit [Quit: Updating details, brb]
skippypaws has joined #asahi
<skippypaws> i was watching the system journal at the same time and there were a ton of i2c bus stuck errors going on as well, perhaps it had to do with that
<j`ey_> yeah the jack components are over i2c
<skippypaws> i'm inclined to believe that the noise was being caused by an internal component and leaking through the jack, because you could hear it even without anything plugged into it
<_jannau_> cs42l83 or cs42l84?
<_jannau_> which device?
<skippypaws> _jannau_: sorry, how would i check?
nyilas has joined #asahi
<_jannau_> those i2c messages should contain cs42l83 or cs42l84? although if you heard something it probably is the speaker? is this a mac mini?
<skippypaws> no, it's a portable mac (m1 macbook air, 2020)
<skippypaws> it began to emit a noise that could be heard with nothing plugged into the device itself, but if you plugged in something into the headphone jack you would hear it there too
<skippypaws> it would start and stop intermittently while i was compiling the edge kernel
nyilas has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

<skippypaws> i'm stressing the cpu on the new kernel and it's not happening anymore, so i suppose that this was fixed or was some kind of bug that didn't reproduce this time around

<mkurz_> jannau, _jannau_: Are you here? The dcp problem just happened again, but now I can ssh into the macbook
<jannau> mkurz_: please paste /sys/kernel/debug/dri/2/state (2 could be 0 or 1 as well)
<jannau> mkurz_: cat /sys/class/drm/card2-eDP-1/{dpms,enabled,modes}
<mkurz_> jannau: if it matters, this time the macbook was on battery, not connected to a power source
<mkurz_> jannau: Again https://gist.github.com/mkurz/21733394e8bde7d6761f2d9c1456ac77 - I updated the same file, the output is appended at the bottom
leitao has joined #asahi
<jannau> mkurz_: `echo 0x1f > /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug` and then copy the drm related kernel messages after kwin tries to
<jannau> set dpms
<mkurz_> jannau: you mean running dmesg?
<jannau> yes
<mkurz_> ok, just asking I don't want to make any mistakes now ;)

<mkurz_> jannau: done, just refresh the gist, there is a new file now
<mkurz_> jannau: I have shitload of chromium instances/tabs open
<jannau> mkurz_: nothing useful in there. can you try `journalctl -k | grep drm | grep -v Xwayland` instead
<jannau> should be safe now for `echo 0x0 > /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug` to stop the logging

<jannau> is kwin_wayland still running?
<mkurz_> in a phone call, give me a minute
leitao has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<mkurz_> jannau: I updated the gist, however the journalctl output gets truncated so here it the direct link: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/mkurz/21733394e8bde7d6761f2d9c1456ac77/raw/bc3ef8f8df09b605c1aa34cc5d4d43b80aa2a644/journalctl_output.txt
<mkurz_> jannau: regarding kwin_wayland, it seems to be running, see bottom of asahi_crash.txt in the gist where I ran "ps aux | grep kwin_wayland"
<mkurz_> jannau: I stopped the debug logging now (after capturing the journalctl output)
<mkurz_> jannau: you are probably aware that you can clone the gist so it's easier for you in case you want to grep, etc.
<jannau> mkurz_: still nothing, please build and run https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/emersion/drm_info
<jannau> and `journalctl -k | grep dcp`
<mkurz_> jannau: I will
<mkurz_> jannau: Added drm_info.txt and journalctl_grep_dcp.txt
pyropeter3 has left #asahi [WeeChat 3.1]
<jannau> mkurz_: as far as I can tell is it kwin which behaves not as expected. I have unfortunately no idea why

<jannau> mkurz_: I really would expect that it starts working with switching to a vt. depending on your keyboard config you might need to press fn + ctrl + option + F1
<jannau> if that doesn't work I wouldn't expect kwin_wayland --replace to work
<jannau> mkurz_: does the machine sleep (s2idle) if it idle for a certain time? if yes was it s2idle before the error occured?

<mkurz_> but that is for ac power and now it was on battery
<mkurz_> however when on ac power it does only happen after locking the screen for a "long" time, like over night. Today it was on ac power and I for sure was away fore more than 10 minutes and it still worked.
<jannau> mkurz_: search in `journalctl -b` for suspend
<mkurz_> "journalctl -b | grep suspend" returns nothing :(
<jannau> I think the log in the github issue it suspended only after you closed the lid after the issue already occured
<mkurz_> I never closed the lid
<mkurz_> never
<mkurz_> not this night
<mkurz_> not today
<mkurz_> I almost never close the lid
<mkurz_> defentily not the last 7 days, macbook was home all the time
<mkurz_> and I never close the lid
<mkurz_> never
<jannau> go ahead with the kwin_wayland --replace if switching to a different vt doesn't fix the display
balrog has joined #asahi
<jannau> you did yesterday: "Mär 21 22:56:55 mkurz-macbook-pro systemd-logind[481]: Lid closed."
<mkurz_> jannau: ah yeah that was because the screen didn't turn on and I thought maybe if I close the lid and re-open it the screen might turn on again
<jannau> but doesn't really matter since it was after the display was already dead
<mkurz_> jannau: so that lid closing already was a rescue mission :)
<mkurz_> jannau: I thought the device went to sleep and maybe I can wake it up by closing the lid and re-open it agian
<mkurz_> jannau: so that lid closing doesn't really count :)
<mkurz_> jannau: but I can guarantee the problem is not caused by closing the lid

<dax> new mesa versions take effect when you log out and back in. new kernel versions take effect after a reboot (sounds like you already did the kernel before coming here, so shouldn't need that)
<jannau> nothing to configure, those are build time options. sleep has to be initiated from the system
