good morning, what is preventing the installer to run on m3 chip already? (beside the support factor)
matteo has joined #asahi
<leio>
It wouldn't even get to booting Linux, so..
milky has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<hdbngr>
So it has something to do with m1n1 and is an issues with firmware initialization?

as I understood loading m1n1 should work already but only for dev. So I assume the firmware init is not working? What are the developers usually doing now?
kidplayer666 has joined #asahi
<j`ey>
hdbngr: no-one is currently working on m3 support
<j`ey>
for the installer it would need a m1n1 that actually worked, and it would also probably need to be extended if there is new firmware
<hdbngr>
So I understand it could work, but it's simply not "officially" tested. In case I'd like to test it by myself I'd have ot execute the installer steps more or less manaully. Are you doing those things usually on testing devices like mac mini, or even on your workstations?
<sven>
I don’t think the latest m1n1 main branch works
milky has joined #asahi
<sven>
and even if it does linux won’t work yet
<hdbngr>
thats totally fine, I just want to understand a bit more. But having some hard time to make my first steps
matteo has joined #asahi
<j`ey>
hdbngr: you can probably hack the installer to work for the m3, but what it installs will be broken, but then you can try build a latest m1n1 manually and install that
<j`ey>
or you can install a second copy of macOS and install m1n1 over the top

<ouzel8>
Hi everyone I using Fedora Asahi on a MacBook Pro M2. I have been encountering power issues since first installing it.
<ouzel8>
The battery barely lasts a day, in any mode, that being use, or hibernation.
<ouzel8>
Can you please advise?
farocas has joined #asahi
<opticron>
That is my experience with the M1 Pro 14". IIRC, "sleep" is currently implemented as s2idle which doesn't require much complex hardware coordination where normal PC "sleep" is s2ram where the CPUs and most hardware turns off (this is not yet implemented) and "hibernation" is s2disk which is where everything turns off and is also not yet implemented
<j`ey>
a whole day doesnt seem that bad really
<ouzel8>
Ah, well then this explains the power consumption between usage of the device.
<j`ey>
(and that's what I said on #fedora-arm!)
<ouzel8>
But in addition it also consumes noticeably more power when generally using.
<ouzel8>
i.e. web browsing, or other general PC use.
<ouzel8>
I see the power charge drop a few percentage (1-3%) every 10s of minutes
<ouzel8>
So I estimate the battery would last a few hours to a day depending on type of use.
<ouzel8>
Then furthermore not overnight, or between days, as no proper hibernate is implemented.
<PaulFertser>
Is asahi battery driver not providing CURRENT_NOW attribute?
<j`ey>
it is
<j`ey>
pretty sure
<j`ey>
ouzel8: well there's not much you can do, reduce screen brightness is the main one
<ouzel8>
Yes but it is simply not usable in comparison to MacOS at this time/
kidplayer666 has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<j`ey>
ouzel8: is it a M2 Pro, Max, or just M2?
farocas has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ouzel8>
M2 Pro
<MichaelLong>
ouzel8, I think it is quite a complex matter to get this kind of hardware to work resonably well. It is already a huge achievment, but I guess we need to wait a couple of years still.
kidplayer666 has joined #asahi
<kidplayer666>
ouzel8: that’s odd
<kidplayer666>
I get at least 8 hours of battery
<kidplayer666>
3-4 watts of power consumption on day to day tasks
<MichaelLong>
kidplayer666, what kind of device you have? an air if I'm not mistaken? Probably not to compare to a M2 Pro. On my M1 Pro on macOS I can see roughly 4-5W on an otherwise idle desktop in clampshell mode having an external display connected. That's as low as it gets.
<kidplayer666>
I have M1 13inch MacBook Pro (the one with a touchbar)

I'm sitting here behind my Studio and wondering if all the power sockets have been erased from the world or what's up with this :)
<PaulFertser>
j`ey: I'm surprised there's any need to estimate consumption by looking at how state of charge changes over time instead of just looking at the immediate current.
