<demon_in_a_jar> Hi all. I am using nixos on a m1 pro. I am doing some hobby embedded linux development and ai came across a very common SD brand in my country which has very bad sdhci driver support. I would like to do a deep dive and setup a development environment using qemu. Ideally I would like to perform PCI passthrough for the SD card reader but I am not sur
<demon_in_a_jar> e what is the state of aarch64 support, what modules I should enable for the guest and what additional qemu settings I need. Any tips?

<Tramtrist> did we just get a big mesa/kernel update?
<Tramtrist> the blog/release posts from asahi are the best as can be.. that being said the changelog from Pat in Slackware never leaves me wondering about the details of a change :)

<pitust> should I remove asahi before turning in my m1 in for repair? what's the best way to do that anyway?
<j`ey> are you worried they'll say you voided the warranty or something?
<pitust> yeah
<pitust> or they will say that it was asahi that caused damage
<pitust> and that the minimum wage aasp employees will have no idea what to do too
<j`ey> make macOS the default boot and they wont have any idea!
<pitust> haha
<demon_in_a_jar> Any hints on the VFIO story when tunning asahi?
<demon_in_a_jar> Vfio-pci results into a -22 error when probing

<sven> I very early turned in my MacBook Air when the screen backlight broke in for repairs with m1n1 proxy as the default boot mode
<sven> didn’t even get a single questions about that and they replaced it under warranty
<sven> -s
<sven> and that wasn’t even at an Apple Store but an „authorized repair shop“
<pitust> okay cool i guess
<chadmed> depends on the country but apple are _usually_ really good about this outside the US
<pitust> i see i see
<chadmed> theyve replaced two of my devices for free no questions asked outside of their warranty periods even
<pitust> im in europe, so probably good?
<pitust> on the other hand this is the fourth (?) time im going to this exact store with the same problem
<pitust> top left usbc port is nonfunctional for some things, but not others
<sven> huh, for me they just ended up replacing the entire machine and gave me a new one
<pitust> i believe they gave me a new machine once (?)
<sven> they claimed it was just a logic board replacement but a small dent that used to be on the chassis was gone afterwards
<j`ey> buf it out with some sand paper
<pitust> probably just easier and cheaper to give you new hardware
<sven> I’m not complaining ofc :D
<pitust> ofc

<PaulFertser> Hm, is buying MBA second hand a bad idea if reliability isn't really that great and DIY repairs seem to be not an option?
<sven> Not sure if reliability is actually bad tbh. biggest issue with second hand sales for Apple machine is that they can be locked to an iCloud id and if the machine is stolen the seller won’t be able to remove it from their account
<PaulFertser> Hm, many people reported here having to use the official repairs so I'm worried.
<j`ey> I dont think many people have said that?
<PaulFertser> Not good statistics of course but what's your gut feeling compared to well-known thinkpads models of the past?
<sven> usually Apple hardware has been fairly reliable for me. I’ve used a previous MacBook for ~8 years and my previous phone for ~5 and could’ve used it longer by replacing the battery
<PaulFertser> I know people change display panels or keyboards occassionally, or spinning rust storage devices. But here I'm reading about angle sensors and backlight and what's not.
<sven> the backlight thing was likely a manufacturing defect since this was a maybe 2-3 weeks after I got that machine fwiw
<sven> if these machine actually had reliability issues I’d expect the press to be all over it
<PaulFertser> Another question: if I'm getting a macbook from e.g. a friend should I ask to blank the ESP or something and declare it as "broken; for parts"?
<sven> like that antenna thing for iPhone 4 or 4s or whatever or that butterfly keywords
<sven> *keyboards
<PaulFertser> Hm, yes, good point, that was all over even in mainstream press probably.
<j`ey> PaulFertser: you mean for customs??
<PaulFertser> j`ey: yeah
<sven> uh, I don’t think we should advise people how to avoid customs here
<PaulFertser> 50+ % of declared value going to customs isn't something that feels fair
<sven> your personal opinion on that doesn’t matter for this channel here, sorry
<PaulFertser> Yeah, ok, but it should be safe in a sense that idevicerestore would be able to "revive" it or something?
<j`ey> well the only ESP is the asahi one, but yeah they could make it only DFU recoverable, whether that really matters or not to customs..

<PaulFertser> The customs also fully prohibit import of "goods that are hacked", whatever that means, go figure...

<PaulFertser> Talking about repairs, is the guide for replacing speakers on ifixit not applicable to modern macbooks? I mean it looks like the speakers could be bought from aliexpress and replaced without much effort and do not require full new top case? What am I missing?
<chadmed> PaulFerster: fwiw one of the devices i needed replacing was because i dropped a 25kg dumbbell on it, and the other was because i stepped on it
<chadmed> ive not had a single apple device actually just outright fail
bruse has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<PaulFertser> chadmed: wow good to know :) doesn't seem to be warranty cases what you mention
<chadmed> i was a student at the time for both of them so they just replaced them
<chadmed> there was no externally visible damage so they just put it down as a defect covered under australian consumer law
<chadmed> in both cases it was just the lcd that cracked
