this will hopefully help the users who are unsure about what to do, like the one emersion linked us to
<mupuf>
bentiss: you probably have some feedback on that

emersion: I replied to that person, but we should probably make the banner a little bit more clear
<mupuf>
bentiss: agreed, this is why I started working on the template: we could link directly
<bentiss>
mupuf: the wiki should probably also make it very clear from the very beginning what is allowed and why. I guess that is where th confusion comes from: users believe they have no rights
<mupuf>
(this would help cibuglog testing, which requires postgresql)
<emersion>
hey, i have someone who's willing to mentor GSoC for PipeWire work
<mupuf>
emersion: \o/
<emersion>
they tried to volunteer but Trevor replied that PipeWire is no X.Org project so can't do it
<emersion>
do the rules really have to be that strict?
<emersion>
i mean, last year all slots were taken by kernel development stuff for instance
<emersion>

(that volunteer is co1umbarius fwiw)
<mupuf>
The purpose of the X.Org Foundation shall be to:
<mupuf>
(i) Research, develop, support, organize, administrate, standardize, promote, and defend a free and open
<mupuf>
accelerated graphics stack. This includes, but is not limited to, the following projects: DRM, Mesa,
<mupuf>
Wayland and the X Window System
<mupuf>
and pipewire is an official project on Freedesktop.org... which is part of the X.Org foundation
<mupuf>
so yeah, I would disagree with trevor
<mupuf>
If we had tons and tons of applicants, we may want to focus on the more core aspects of the foundation, but pipewire seem like a pretty essential part of the Wayland ecosystem IMO
<mupuf>
emersion: mind moving this discussion to #xf-bod?
<emersion>
oh, i didn't know this existed
<emersion>
should i just post the question there, or wait until next meeting?
<mupuf>
emersion: live and learn ;)
<mupuf>
oh no, feel free to just copy paste what has been asked and answered already
<mupuf>
then ask for acks
<emersion>
thank you!

sorry, it seems like there was a misunderstanding, and co1umbarius is the student, not the mentor. but the question still stands :)

<danvet>
mupuf, we didn't include all fd.o hosted projects under x.org
<danvet>
but also it's intentionally fairly open and if a project doesn't run their own gsoc we've generally been happy to include them I thought
<mupuf>
no, but the overlap is real ;)
<mupuf>
but yeah, you are right. There are no automatic passes. I guess in cases like this, one would need to bring it up to the BoD for a decision to be made
