Remark on 64-bit instructions on Valhall vs Bifrost--
<alyssa>
For a while I thought Valhall had "real" 64-bit sources while Bifrost (v7) did not, and I was worried this would require a nontrivial change to the compiler IR to handle both efficiently.
<alyssa>
To some extent this is still true, but there's an alternative way to look at Valhall's sources,
<alyssa>
namely that for every encoded 64-bit source, there are 2 logical 32-bit sources
<alyssa>
for 32-bit instructions, the encoding even supports this (e.g. the BLEND encoding)
<alyssa>
so in that sense, the IR is the same as Bifrost, it's just encoded more compactly
<alyssa>
Unfortunately the story isn't so simple, that compact encoding adds tons of RA constraints that aren't there on Bifrost

<macc24>
alyssa: i got a weird question, are you a mathematician?
<alyssa>
macc24: shrug
<alyssa>
i have enough credits for a minor in pure mathematics, but that hardly makes me a mathematician :-p
<robmur01>
computer science is basically a specialised branch of maths anyway
* macc24
noted
<macc24>
i wonder if there's corelation between using "namely" and being into math
<alyssa>
Not sure, but there are words with definitely mathematician correlations, namely "hence" and "thus".
<daniels>
I use 'namely' and my maths level is roughly the Count from Sesame Street
<alyssa>
daniels: C is for C%s%s%sAII76f!us
<alyssa>
Segfault.
<robmur01>
conversely, I have two maths degrees yet I'm a kernel hacker
<macc24>
daniels: i have no math degree and find myself using 'thus'
<daniels>
alyssa: 0xfffffffe integer overflows! a ha ha ha ha
<daniels>
macc24: you're halfway there then
<macc24>
daniels: hopefully i'll never be a mathematician
<robmur01>
real mathematicians say ∴
<alyssa>
robmur01: Do they?
<alyssa>
Our first-year profs were adamant no real mathematicians use ∴ and that's a fiction of Canadian high schools we need to forget now that we're big kids.
<alyssa>
(But => is acceptable)
<macc24>
alyssa: real mathematicians use "question mark" instead of '?'
<robmur01>
Well, I remember having to in at least one module...
<robmur01>
don't make me dig out my old folders to compute the "greatest number of consecutive pages of notes containing no actual words" metric :P
<robmur01>
(wild guess, probably at least 6)
<macc24>
depending on reading skill of reader i might have entire notebook full of those pages, as my handwriting looks like ekg diagram
<rasterman>
alyssa: it has a lot... a LOT... :) i was having a good read of the docs not long ago and marveled at just how many formats it suports .. yuv included
<alyssa>
macc24: LOL
<rasterman>
L:)
<rasterman>
macc24: hahahaha no no... talking about
