<Nipuna> Hi, i'm looking to install ubuntu asahi on my mac, however i'm only seeing 23.10 and not 22.04 anymore (says it should be available according to the github readme). is this a bug or has 22.04 support been removed? thanks in advance :)
<Nipuna> having a look, i can see this commit https://github.com/UbuntuAsahi/ubuntuasahi.github.io/commit/b05a288f1b4e23343bee863944c55304809f6f18, is it no longer supported because it doesnt work or because its not tested
<tobhe[m]> hi! we have removed it because it was really hard to maintain and keep feature parity
<tobhe[m]> audio support for example relied on a few dependencies that are almost impossible to backport
<Nipuna> thanks for the reply! ah damn, i assume there is no way for me to install 22.04 then (maybe by checking out the repo directly)? i need that particular LTS version for work (I use ROS) so even if some nice to have features are missing, i would really appreciate being able to install it myself (if possible)
<tobhe> if it's only for development have you thought about using a 22.04 lxd container?
<tobhe> that would allow you to get 23.10 hardware support and still use a 22.04 development environment
<Nipuna> no i havent, but i'll give that a try!
<Nipuna> thank you
<eslerm[m]> thanks for updating the readme tobhe

<tobhe[m]> eslerm: do you think we should reach out to Rick re Kubuntu builds: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/hello-everyone-i-bring-good-news-from-kubuntu/42332
<tobhe[m]> build worked btw
<tobhe[m]> after fixing universe
<john-cabaj[m]> I'd be curious to check out Kubuntu
<tobhe[m]> I can build an image if you'd like
<john-cabaj[m]> It was supported at one point, no?
<tobhe[m]> I never published them officially
<tobhe[m]> I'd like to support it
<john-cabaj[m]> Was curious if we had any metrics on users
<john-cabaj[m]> Could put out a Discord poll
<tobhe[m]> I think we do from the snap store downloads. also marcan should have numbers from the installer
<john-cabaj[m]> Linux Mint would be something
<tobhe[m]> but that is a derivative, not a flavor 🙂
<tobhe[m]> Ubunt Cinnamon uses the same desktop environment
<john-cabaj[m]> Right. Not sure if there is an opportunity for collaboration there, thoug
<john-cabaj[m]> Maybe difficult without snaps
<john-cabaj[m]> s/thoug/though/
<tobhe[m]> I wouldn't mind collaborating with derivatives. I reused a lot of work that was done for pop OS initially when I started
<tobhe[m]> but I am busy enough with debian + ubuntu + openbsd 😄
<eslerm[m]> <tobhe[m]> "eslerm: do you think we should..." <- heh, saw your message afterwards. hope I got it right
<eslerm[m]> <john-cabaj[m]> "Maybe difficult without snaps" <- Ubuntu Sway is the same 😢
<popey> something "we" can help with?
<eslerm[m]> tobhe: could you add an updated version of kubuntu to the beta installer?
<tobhe[m]> popey: I think the desktop team is aware of that
<tobhe[m]> ah no, not this one
<popey> I'll be honest, I would love for you guys to collaborate with official flavours before the likes of mint and pop
<popey> Neither of whom are particularly flattering about Canonical or Ubuntu, but accept the work we do anyway 🤷
<tobhe[m]> yes, that's also how i feel
<tobhe[m]> with the exception of debian of course because that actually makes our life easier
<popey> Oh, debian should be top of the list <3 :D
<tobhe[m]> also flavors are much less work since they use the same infrastructure
<tobhe[m]> building flavor images is a matter of passing the right arguments to launchpad at build time
<tobhe[m]> eslerm[m]: will do
<popey> Would be great to get coverage on all the flavours. Especially the popular ones like Kubuntu and Xubuntu. I bet XFCE would fly on the M1 GPU, given it's so lean.
<eslerm[m]> maybe we could add xfce to our beta-installer for dev testers, without supporting needing to support Xorg-DEs in our installer 😉
<tobhe[m]> we are a bit limited because upstream doesn't support xorg
<eslerm[m]> s/xfce/xubuntu/
<tobhe[m]> but most technically work
<eslerm[m]> s/xfce/xubuntu/, s/supporting//
<popey> Oh that's a good point.
<tobhe[m]> not sure if this works but if it does we should get a kubuntu image
<tobhe[m]> looks like it worked
<tobhe[m]> ah looks like the installer has a new hidden feature to configure the boot selection icon
<tobhe[m]> "hidden"
<tobhe[m]> used by fedora but not announced
<john-cabaj[m]> Can we drop the Ubuntu Asahi icon in?
<tobhe[m]> I hope so
<tobhe[m]> of course apple also use their own file format
<tobhe[m]> I wonder if we can just use any of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Icon_Image_format
<tobhe[m]> fedora uses type it32, I manged to convert ours to type ic09
<eslerm[m]> I need to organize our media assets (logos)
<eslerm[m]> I'll do that and make a logo with whichever format upstream uses
<tobhe[m]> that would be nice
<tobhe[m]> i used png2icns from icns to convert it
<tobhe[m]> the website png specifically
<eslerm[m]> I'll just make the media assets repo for now
<eslerm[m]> it will have bash scripts to take vector images and convert them
<eslerm[m]> like, for cmyk printing etc
