tobhe_: hi, I tested boot from usb on m1 and m1pro macbooks. It boots fine but switching consoles doesn't work with ctrl-alt-Fn keys.

I was going to ask about how the experience with Gentoo Linux is at the moment on M1 machines, more worried about being behind on updates and stuff more than anything, has anyone had experience with Gentoo on these machines recently?

ocelot_yep_, only recently I've installed gentoo on my MacBook Pro M1 and with little work and the available resources, everything that is currently supported is working. But I've little day-to-day experience yet.
