<mps> does mesa asahi 20230801 fixes firefox crash with 6.4 kernels
zumi has joined #asahi-alt
<mps> looks like not at least for me
<mps> will try to upgrade firefox to 116.0
<psykose> the 6.4 crash is fixed by CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK=n unless they fixed that
<psykose> from what i remember they didn't though, only in 6.5
<psykose> and the y->bool conversion in https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/CAJuCfpH4HyAVO0fVYKGR9xhZJu19Ek_dTMEBiCCSbOjkDxXD=w@mail.gmail.com/T/ doesn't disable it on defconfig upgrade, has to be manually unset
<mps> ok, will try to set CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK=n instead of CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK=y
<psykose> i don't know what you set on asahi tho
<mps> =n
<_jannau__> psykose: CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK=n is the default on arm64
<psykose> the kconfig mps made has it as =y
<psykose> shrug
<mps> iirc it was default and I left it as such
<_jannau__> oh. I still see occasional Firefox crashes
<_jannau__> with CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK=n
<psykose> yeah, probably separate
<mps> psykose: in alpine is kernel without GPU enabled
<mps> and I didn't noticed crash with this kernel
<_jannau__> or at least it defaulted to =n in make oldconfig
<psykose> iirc if you oldconfig on .0 it ends up being =y and then a new oldconfig after doesn't =n it, but i forgot, maybe they changed it around more (or just fixed it) by .7
<psykose> i build my own kernels so i =n'd it a million years ago and forgot about it

<Ry_Darcy> CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK is "on" (=y) on my M1 Mini (Debian) setup. I cannot remember coming across this parameter before. Running 6.4-3-asahi. It would seem this (Allow per-vma locking during page fault handling) is relatively new..

<jannau> sigh, I must have mixed it up with CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK_STATS. CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK isn't even user slectable
<mps> jannau: right

<_jannau__> chadmed: did you ever get the gentoo kernel patches to work? for 6.4 we need to fix the PER_VMA_LOCK bug in 6.4.0 somehow
<chadmed> _jannau_: they applied cleanly when i last tested them, but that was before we started rebasing atop -rc releases for which there were no genpatches
<chadmed> i assume they still apply cleanly
mikelee has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed> dunno how marcan feels about doing that though given previous -alt kernel meddling causing superfluous bug reports
mikelee has joined #asahi-alt
<_jannau__> fedora asahi applies asahi patches on top of the fedora kernel
<chadmed> oh ok yeah we should start doing genpatches again then
<chadmed> ill sort it tomorrow if i dont wake up to a PR :P
<_jannau__> I think It tried enabling them with 6.3 locally but failed. can't remember details
Cyrinux9474 has quit []
<chadmed> ah let me just try it now then
<chadmed> they apply to 6.4.0_p3 no worries
<mps> chadmed: do you have url where we can download patches
<chadmed> ymmv on other distros
<mps> chadmed: thanks
<chadmed> and theres a circular dependency on randstruct that youll need to manually resolve because it blows up rust
mikelee has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed> oh its deeper than that
<chadmed> i dont have the energy left to sort this tonight
<chadmed> the patches apply cleanly but kconfig cannot resolve some circular dependency introduced by the GKSPP
<chadmed> weekend problem :)
<mps> np, I'm not in hurry
<chadmed> ah ok so KSPP enable randstruct by default and rust cant have randstruct
<chadmed> (i cant help myself)
<psykose> press the power button king

<Ry_Darcy> @chadmed just applied the (CONFIG_PER_VMA_LOCK) patch to my Debian (6.4-3-asahi) with no Rust (1.68.2) problems.
<Ry_Darcy> Let us see what the system and FF says..
