<BenTheTechGuy> I want to build a 4K page size kernel to test some things on my machine, but I've been made aware that I need some patches for things to work properly. I can't seem to find these anywhere; can someone point me in the right direction? After these patches are applied, is there anything else I need to do aside from set the 4K pages config option?

<leio> BenTheTechGuy: I may be completely off, because I only have read about it from previous chatter in the past week or two, but I understood it just won't work on apple silicon because some talking to some hardware needs to be done in 16kB pages and linux can't do it hybrid
<j`ey> BenTheTechGuy: what are you trying to test? could you do it in a VM?
<mps> leio: 4K can work fine on apple silicon with patched kernel, I used it for some time but now not sure I could rebase it latest kernel
<mps> and afaik someone works on these patches to be added in future
<chadmed> mps: no wifi though right
<mps> chadmed: wifi worked last time I use kernel with 4K
<mps> s/use/used/
<chadmed> oh huh when did that change
<chadmed> last i heard some of the DARTs couldnt be bypassed
<mps> I still have 5.19.0 kernel with this patch
<mps> I boot it when I have to do some things with F2FS mmc cards
<sven> there’s a patch series I wrote quite a while ago that works around the iommu limitations
<sven> with that WiFi will work
<mps> sven: I can confirm
<sven> I think lina also hacked something similar for her gpu work
<mps> iirc allysa told me that 4K 'is a thing' but not yet ready for mere mortals
<sven> it’s just not upstreamable in its current state and also will fail in probably funny ways with tbt
<mps> I would like to have my FS on nvme to be f2fs and f2f2 can only work with 4K page size
<leio> so more than mere mortals could just run a 4kB kernel and FEX?
<sven> if you’re fine with keeping the parts once it breaks you can still find the patches in some branches of the asahi linux repo

<sven> we just want to prevent guides or ready made solutions with those changes because then you get end user who don’t necessarily understand what they sign up for using them and possibly breaking their systems
<sven> *users
<sven> and shipping 16k kernels for while already resulted in fixes to a few other projects :)
<leio> and those that know what they're doing should be able to just switch back to a 16kb kernel then
<sven> and preferably not complain that they lost some data ;)
<leio> in an ideal world where we had hybrid kernels a thing, what would be more efficient (for non-FEX kind of stuff) to actually have - 4kB or 16kB? :)
<leio> yeah, to me it's just hard to imagine losing data, I guess if you go and overwrite the whole partition with a new install instead of swapping the kernel and setting some boot configuration around
<leio> or setting some*
<sven> 16kb was like 20% or so faster in some measurements people did
<leio> I assume 16kB because why otherwise Apple uses it

<BenTheTechGuy> thanks for all the info
<BenTheTechGuy> I don't need WiFi
<BenTheTechGuy> I wanted to test some WINE stuff
<j`ey> BenTheTechGuy: could test in a VM right?
