<robinp>
how much space (minimal) do I need for a 2nd macOS install? (Guessing I don't need the 38 Gb overhead as I can just reinstall if I need to update ?)

I'm trying to follow hypervisor wiki. Do I need to install a 2nd copy of MacOS and then install m1n1 on it?
<j`ey>
if you dont care about your current install you can just install m1n1 in your current macOS install
<millenialhacker>
Let me try that

For Mac OSX running under hyper visor, I assume I should concat Macho kernel to m1n1 before installing it with kmutil, right?
<VinDuv>
No, you install a bare m1n1 and you transfer the kernel using the serial interface

<marcan>
robinp: you can install a second macOS install on the same APFS container as your primary, which means it can share the slack for updates
<millenialhacker>
marcan: any guide about that
<millenialhacker>
?
<marcan>
just create a new volume and install to it
<marcan>
you don't even need any command line tools for that
<marcan>
you can use the app store or just the install macos option in recovery mode
<marcan>
Disk Utility.app works to create a new volume at least
<marcan>
(if ~nothing else)

cursed dcp interface is cursed
<jannau>
dpms is now somewhat working
<jannau>
dcp doesn't even seem consistant. On the initial poweron I don't get a hotplug event but I get on after turning it off and on
<jannau>
this is on the mac studio so I assume iboot just loads the firmware
<millenialhacker>
I'm trying to install OSx on a partition of 50gb but it fails in the end (when there is less than one minute remaining), do you know whats the minimum space requirement for OSX
<millenialhacker>
?
<jannau>
this is with the nice display. I have a cursed Dell 4k display which disconnects immediately after setting the mode (with a hotplug disconnect event)
<jannau>
I mostly bale the display for this

millenialhacker: I would have hoped mac os would complain beforehand. iirc it worked with 75GB, could have been macos 11 though

<sven>
iirc I had the same issue with 50gb, it worked for a while and then failed sometime in the process
<sven>
~70-80gb should work

I did what marcan suggested, create a volume inside same APFS container to share updates, now trying with 100gb just in case
<millenialhacker>
(I'm not an expert with diskutil so it took me some time to understand Apple layout for disks and right options)

<sven>
the diskutil UI is pretty confusing. It’s probably meant for the average mac user which leads to some weird trade offs
<tpw_rules>
it's also just plain buggy...
<sven>
At least you can file radars about bugs ;)
<tpw_rules>
don't you need a developer account?
<millenialhacker>
I used the CLI, I quit long time ago trying to understand / use the UI app. It's by far the worse disk management app I have ever seen
<millenialhacker>
I can actually invoke apps from one Mac OSX into the other, that's cool.

Has anyone found error building M1N1 natively on MacOS?
<millenialhacker>
In my case, it says: "no rule to make target data/bootlogo_128.png"

Still haven’t heard anything regarding how to upstream any information about the perf counters but at least the result from the test gives me a fairly reliable rr to use on m1 now….
