<ivabus> Hi, I'm working on a script that downloads all the files (at the user's choice) necessary to install Asahi Linux, and I ran into a problem with giant IPSW files. The wiki states that the installer does not need the full IPSW file, but only the necessary bits. Can someone explain this to me, I looked through the installer code and couldn't find any useful information.
<ChaosPrincess> https://github.com/AsahiLinux/asahi-installer/blob/main/src/urlcache.py this thing can download parts of a zip
<ivabus> I know about it, the question is about _what_ parts should I download
<ivabus> Or is the file downloaded as soon as there is a need for the next part of it?
<ChaosPrincess> look at calls to extract and similar
<_jannau__> it loads the necessary parts to extract the requested files, easiest solution would probably a script which extracts the requested files and produces an offline_$IPSW that the offline installer will use instead of the real ipsw

<ivabus> Thanks, I think I'll add this after the first version is released, because everything else works fine (with big IPSWs)

<tarzeau_> so i have debian on apple m1 running, and will connect it tomorrow to the internet for free software and debian developers to put it to good use
<tarzeau_> if anyone is interested ping me (i'm gone a month for holidays now though :)
<tarzeau_> my qnap 10gbit usb-c adapter appears not to be recognized according to ifconfig -a, bu the 1gbit one looks good...
<_jannau__> tarzeau_: is the 10gbit one thunderbolt 3? a quick search suggests that. in that case it is not supported
<tarzeau_> jannau: yes it works on macOS and it works on linux on x86_64
<tarzeau_> jannau: needs a minimum kernel and something friend tried it on fedora. i didn't bother trying it myself on linux yet. but will give it a go rsn
<tarzeau_> if lsusb output is helpful, can put link online tomorrow
<_jannau__> is it QNA-T310G1[ST]? That is thunderbolt 3 using tunneled PCIe. There is no thunderbolt support on asahi yet, only 10gbit/s usb 3 gen2
<tarzeau_> ah i see... let me try to read that very small letters on the thing... qna t310g1t
<tarzeau_> yes matches. thank you for clarification. so big fat storage not with 1gbit nfs. but more likely usb3
billak has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<tarzeau_> having packaged openseachest, i didn't get answer from asking for storage from seagate :'(
<tarzeau_> also most large companies like apple, dell, hp, lenovo were not able to answer asking for funding the project linux+debian. but i found friends that did
<tarzeau_> +samsung
