ivabus: you basically want to refactor the installer stub code to have a mode where instead of installing to a target, it just enumerates what files it needs without copying anything, and use that to build the smaller zip
<marcan>
it's been on my todo list to do that some day for a longtime, patches welcome
<marcan>
also keep in mind you can only do offline installs from recoveryOS (installs from macOS require phoning home to Apple), which means an offline installer should probably also use the IAPhysicalMedia trick to show up as a "real" offline USB "bootable" installer

<tarzeau_>
jannau: can you recommend any 10gbit adapter that works? meanwhile bananas.ethz.ch is online and 1gbit is nice and all but 10gbit would be even nicer and better
<tarzeau_>
so if there's developers wanting to build on remote host, feel free to request accounts

<jannau>
tarzeau_: I'm not aware of any 10gbit usb-3.x nics just thunderbolt. I suppose vendors are trying to avoid not hitting 10gbps in network traffic over 10gbps usb3
<tarzeau_>
i see. so unless i get a mac mini with builtin 10gb or mac studio i won't get faster internet. or well mac pro with 100gbit
<jannau>
sabrent nt-ss5g is a 5gbit usb adapter which works
<tarzeau_>
noted. thanks
<jannau>
there are a 5gbit and 2.5gbit usb nics that should work. the 10gbit will start working when we have thunderbolt support
<tarzeau_>
the one i have? so matter of time only?
<tarzeau_>
is there a list of software or items people can try to work on?
<jannau>
yes, it's a matter of time but USB is cursed so it's impossible to say when

the mess starts when you have chained tbt devices that possibly also tunnel DP. I still can crash the tbt coprocessor in those cases :/

with a very helpful „assert 4816 failed“ printf because everything thunderbolt seems to be heavily redacted

<joshtaylor>
sorry for the silly question, but i see with the asahi-installer there is boot.bin in the uefi-only-xxx.zip file, is there a way to build this same file locally? I've read the m1n1 wiki, but unsure of how to build `esp/m1n1/boot.bin` like the uefi-only, as I'm unsure of the exact dtb etc to use. I have the asahi-installer setup to use `os/boot.bin` correctly, and can reboot into recovery, setup everything up, then when rebooting
<joshtaylor>
into uefi I get stuck on the asahi logo, as I believe I need the correct esp/m1n1/boot.bin. I'm using 2023 14" MacBook Pro with a "Apple M2 Max" (T6020), so having to build stuff myself, which is fine.
<ChaosPrincess>
have you managed to build raw m1n1.bin ?
