povik: the platform_max stuff doesn't work properly because those soc_mixer_control structs are globals of the codec driver, not allocated per instance, so limiting the volume of one speaker affects all of them.

Although it would add a dependency on apfs-fuse, it would be nice to use this approach in asahi-fwupdate to get firmware files without having to install a new stub partition or boot into macOS.
