Hi, is this the best place to ask for some support?
pb17 has joined #asahi
<streptokok>
manniefesto: There's the ancient "don't ask to ask, just ask" adagium. Though as opposed to ancient times, you may need to stick around for a long time to maybe get said support.
<streptokok>
Any case, as good a place as any.
<manniefesto>
Aha, thanks, apologies :)
<manniefesto>
I'm having some trouble with systemd and containers
<manniefesto>
EG: when running a container in 'privileged' mode I still can not access systemd from the container itself.
<manniefesto>
I have tried podman, moby-engine and containerd with the same result, so I currently conclude that it must be systemd configuration on my asahi fedora install.
<streptokok>
1) Sorry *I* can't help you. And 2) this doesn't sound to be trouble specific to Asahi?
<manniefesto>
The full error message being "System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate."
<manniefesto>
It's possible that it's not, but the same config has worked on other distro's, so I think it may be related to default config possibly.
<manniefesto>
I was hoping that it may have been discussed previously :)
<streptokok>
Sorry to be of no help; hoping along with you. :l
<manniefesto>
Thanks anyway :)

what is your container trying to do with systemd?
<manniefesto>
Hi, as far as I can tell it's trying to start a Postgresql service inside the container
<manniefesto>
I'm also seeing some errors regarding systemd when I do an apt upgrate for example

Hi, any idea why Steam would launch and run just fine, but over time (few minutes) bring the system to a halt?
<knedlik>
I do see the swap usage increase by gigabytes over that time, and if it doesn't get killed by the system, I have to kill it to make the system usable again
chrisl has joined #asahi
<fl0_id>
knedlik how much ram do you have?
<knedlik>
8 gigs w/ 32 gigs of swap, of which 8 is zram
<knedlik>
I don't expect any AAA gaming, but at least stuff on the level of Stardew Valley should be playable on this, let alone steam...
<chaos_princess>
steam is kind of the problem in itself, due to it taking like 2 gb or so
<knedlik>
Sure, but it worsens over time, even with steamcmd
<knedlik>
Kinda makes me wonder whether the problem isn't in the microvm
<chaos_princess>
it is, the inner os right now will keep growing it's disk cache until it runs out of memory
<knedlik>
is there a way to go around it?
<chaos_princess>
you can try enabling dax, but it requires code patches, and from what i heard it has some problems

<knedlik>
if there's no easier way to do it, I don't have a problem with being on the bleeding edge
<chaos_princess>
it's not even bleeding edge, but more grabbing random dev branches and duct-taping them together
<j`ey>
which tried to monitor host memory and then make the guest use less
<knedlik>
I'll try that. In case that doesn't help, where can I find the pieces to duct-tape together?
<jamiel>
Just been testing out Steam on my M1 Mac - I have 16GB ram, a 16GB swap and 16GB Zram ... When launching CS2 normally or forcing it to use Proton it just gets killed by the OOM killer during startup after the Valve logo. Has anyone managed to get it working for CS2?
<knedlik>
jamiel: That might either be a similar issue to mine, or the shader cache
<j`ey>
chaos_princess: btw have you played with rutababaga and qemu?
<chaos_princess>
not in qemu
<fl0_id>
knedlik well, in the announcements they said due to overhead they said they wouldn't recommend below 16 GB. Though seems like there might also be an extra problem for you
<j`ey>
ok well, I guess my question doesnt really matter, but is rutabaga meant to show up as a gpu in /dev/dri/renderD128 or whatever?
<chaos_princess>
yes
<j`ey>
maybe I was missing kernel modules..
<knedlik>
fl0_id i did see that, but also thought that this is a suspiciously large overhead
<fl0_id>
knedlik ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sure there might be some safety margin. then again, depending on desktop environment, that also uses like 2 GB probably. 2 for the browser, 2 for steam... ;) (just guesstimating)

Is there a way to disable disk cache in the microvm? Neither the pull request linked earlier nor dax seem to help with the fact that swap usage skyrockets during disk I/O...
chrisl has joined #asahi
<chaos_princess>
try limiting memory via --mem=6000 or sth
<knedlik>
okay this is weird... after building libkrun with dax yet again, it skyrocketed to ~12G and then fell back to 4G swap

fl0_id: it also aflicts the hypervisor and devicetree bindinf links; I think it is because the web builder handles [[this text|url_fragment]] links differently.
<JamesB192>
changing those out for older [this text](url_gragment) links would wind up breaking at least one set of ouput.
<fl0_id>
JamesB192 which output would it break? Clearly the other output works and is used frequently in the wiki
<fl0_id>
not other output, I mean the older style of links

might well be wrong about the standard []() type link. It depends on if the link gets shunted into a subfolder in the wiki.

pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

<skye>
I know its 100% a possibility that it just wont work but, I am having an issue with SteamVR. The output log says many lines of something along the lines of "Internal error: /home/skye/.local/share/vulkan/implicit_layer.d/steamfossilize_i386.json is not in /usr/lib/pressure-vessel/overrides/share/vulkan/implicit_layer.d" and I am wondering if there is an easy solution that i just haven't found?
<chaos_princess>
vr will not work any time soon, it needs drm lease, and it is not implemented in the vm
<skye>
Ok, thanks for the clarification!
