It would be nice for the installer to ask for the size of the standalone "EFI" enviroment. Resizing fat32 is a pain :P
<Calandracas_>
I guess I can manually edit the installer script

whatre you doing on the ESP that needs more than 500 MB
<Calandracas_>
maybe I don't need 8 kernel+initramfs pairs
ddxtanx has joined #asahi
<Calandracas_>
really its just that I have a lot of kernels on there. I keep extra kernels around since its easier to recover my system when I break something
<chadmed_>
i have 6 kernels with room to spare but my builds are skinny
<Calandracas_>
oh i just realized I have a bunch of UKI's on there too :P
<Calandracas_>
my kernels and initramfs are 25M each, so yeah 500M should be more than enough
<Calandracas_>
if I really need more i can create XBOOTLDR

hello - where is the best place to ask questions about issues I encounter in managing this version of linux? e.g., memory management issues
<mbeavitt>
Should I post an issue on github? This feels incorrect as it's likely not something wrong with the system, but me misunderstanding something!

mbeavitt: asking your real question first might help to get more answers
<Halian>
o/
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: there's also a very active Reddit community but, again, full question is needed there. And if it's Fedora-specific, there's a Fedora web discussion forum.
matteo has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

mbeavitt: and BTW, Asahi Linux is not just about Linux, the kernel, there're essential userpace parts and tweaks and fixes too.

<Halian>
Petition to start calling the kernel by its filename, vmlinuz, so Linux will unambiguously refer to the family of O/Ses. :þ
<mbeavitt>
Ok! I did ask around on reddit already, but was just checking if there was some sort of discussion board specifically for more in depth questions. Thank you for the tips!
<PaulFertser>
Well, this name is arch-specific in a way.
<Halian>
mbeavitt: what's your question about memory management?
<mbeavitt>
I'm trying to get the system to utilise the swap space more, due to persistent OOM kills during normal app use
<mbeavitt>
As an initial troubleshooting attempt I've tried setting /proc/sys/vm/swappiness to 100, which seems to help
<mbeavitt>
but I can't get this change to persist after reboot. I tried adding vm.swappiness = 100 to /etc/sysctl.conf, but on reboot 'cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness' returns 60, the default value
<PaulFertser>
In my experience with low RAM targets no matter what swappiness is the kernel OOM killer won't do anything till the swap is ~full.
<mbeavitt>
Wow, ok. I have ~15G in swap, and it never reaches above 2G during use
<PaulFertser>
Have you tried inspecting OOM report closely?
<mbeavitt>
Yeah, I have a few journalctl logs saved
<Halian>
Myself, I wish I could figure out how to set up ALARM, since I'm hopelessly Arch-pilled lol, even though it's not great for desktop use IIRC
<mbeavitt>
Ok, I'll look into how the system is trying to load sysctl.conf, but the fact that you're saying it shouldn't be sending kill signals until swap is full is making me think this isn't the problem
Bertrand___ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]

<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: where's the text paste of the OOM kernel log part?
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: oh btw, it's normal to have physical RAM near full during normal usage because the free space is used for disk cache automatically. It's freed under pressure automatically too, so nothing to worry about.
<mbeavitt>
ah unfortunately I had it set to auto delete after a certain time by accident. here's one from today: https://pastebin.com/fhJt30EH
<mbeavitt>
Yes, I am aware of the fact that full RAM is not usually a concern, but it's when it reaches ~7G that kill signals start being sent
<mbeavitt>
Is it dangerous to share uncensored journalctl pastes like this?
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: do you know you can watch youtube with mpv by just passing it a video URL?
<mbeavitt>
haha, cool. I didn't know that. I think I tried to do it with VLC once. I like being recommended things by the algorithm unfortunately :P
<PaulFertser>
I do not see anything dangerous in that especially if you do not run anything custom. But it gives a chance to smart devs look and give an educated suggestion.
<mbeavitt>
Oh, wow, that's my log. Ok, I had no idea it was actively under investigation. Thanks for pointing me towards that post!!
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: it's a different case though. In yours it's GFP_KERNEL_ACCOUNT allocation and somehow a unix socket was involved, so the kernel itself needed more memory to handle something being sent somewhere locally (AF_UNIX socket family), I wonder what it is on your system.
<mbeavitt>
Ah, what I mean is both the log I shared just now and the one Hector posted on Mastodon are from the same computer - mine
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: I notice unlike the majority of Asahi Linux users you run GNOME and not KDE Plasma.
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: haha interesting.
<mbeavitt>
Haha - I had some stability issues. I run plasma at work so I'm still on the fence
<mbeavitt>
Do you think it would make a difference?
sand4rt has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<PaulFertser>
Firefox gets killed just because it's the biggest process, it's the kernel needing memory there, not userspace.
<mbeavitt>
Right
kaazoo has joined #asahi
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: well, imagine how many M1 users are out there using Firefox to watch youtube. I'd say a lot. So there's a chance something weird is happening on your machine due to some of your custom settings.
<mbeavitt>
hmm - I did actually completely reformat and reinstall asahi to try and fix this issue.
<mbeavitt>
But yes, I agree. It seems pretty weird
<mbeavitt>
I did get someone on Reddit saying they had been experiencing the same issues on an 8GB machine
<PaulFertser>
Do you have any other backtraces reported by other parts of the kernel sometimes?
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: don't trust people who do not show dmesg ;)
<mbeavitt>
>Do you have any other backtraces reported by other parts of the kernel sometimes? How would I check that?
<mbeavitt>
haha, good point.
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: dmesg or it should be present in your system log too, so "journalctl -xe" and you can check prior boots too.
kaazoo has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<mbeavitt>
Great, I'll have a dig around. Thanks for all the help, it's really fun being involved in something new like this, and I've always wanted to learn more about linux. Hope I'm not being too annoying!
<PaulFertser>
mbeavitt: no problem, just do not ask to ask :)
<PaulFertser>
And I suggest you stay on channels, there're some real developers who have 100x more clue than me so they might have much better ideas.
