<nickchan> maz: reading up some of your merged patches on the list does the architecture constriants that when algorithm of address and generic authentication is IMPDEF, the algorithm is actually the same for both of them?
<nickchan> ofc that's very insane but I have been trying to find something in the spec that disallows that

<maz> nickchan: that's not explicitly disallowed in the spec. but if an implementation does, they get to keep the pieces and I'll happily ignore PAuth on their HW.
<maz> Apple has some really funky extensions where they seed the algorithm on a per-EL basis, which we of course don't support. It appears that by some magic (probably thanks to what m1n1 does), this feature is disabled.

<tricky_> Is this the right place to ask help questions?
<tricky_> I'm trying to use the asahi-fedora-usb repo to install on a usb thumb drive. U-boot doesn't seem to recognize it. I know it's not the USB because I was able to get u-boot to recognize it with the ubuntu-asahi project (however it wouldn't boot in this case)
<tricky_> Does anyone know of any common issues / workarounds with getting asahi-fedora-usb to boot?
greguu has joined #asahi
<LarstiQ> what do you mean with u-boot doesn't recognize it? The usb on my M1 is shaky so it sometimes takes 8 tries to boot from usb
buroa235 has quit [Quit: The Lounge - https://thelounge.chat]

<tricky_> When I go to the bootmenu, all I see is nvme0 nvme1 nvme2, and no usb's show up. I then go back and try "usb reset" a few times, and I still don't see any storage devices.

<opticron> tricky_, I was under the impression that installing to external media isn't supported
<tricky_> @opticron It appears to be supported: https://github.com/leifliddy/asahi-fedora-usb
<tricky_> I just can't get u-boot to recognize the usb
buroa235 has quit [Quit: The Lounge - https://thelounge.chat]

<tricky_> I think it might be some issue with the EFI mount created by asahi-fedora-usb. Or maybe some change to the grub config. Or maybe I just need to run "usb reset" a few more times like @LarstiQ was saying
Helmholtz has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<LarstiQ> ah _on_ a usb thumb drive
<LarstiQ> iBoot can't boot from external media afaik
<opticron> LarstiQ, I'm assuming they have u-boot in an EFI partition on the internal drive and they're using that to try to boot from USB
<tricky_> @LarstiQ yeah that's my understanding. Can't figure it out though.
<tricky_> There are a few examples of it in the wild
chrisl has joined #asahi
<tricky_> Specifically, I'm trying to follow this guide in order to Encrypt my internal Fedoral install:
<LarstiQ> opticron: right, that works
<tricky_> Just so far have been unable to boot the usb

<opticron> fl0_id, I get the appeal, but it's not nearly as portable as on generic x86 machines and almost completely defeats the point (there are still *some* reasons for doing so even if it isn't portable)

<fl0_id> opticron yeah sure. as supposedly resizing is easy, biggest reason is probably having a small disk. I kinda hate myself a little bit for paying apples ssd premium, but I will probably unhate myself once there is m3 support, as I know I have enough internal space
<JamesB192> Wasn't there something on YouTube about replacing the storage in a M1 mini? I think it was dosdude or someone like that...

<fl0_id> JamesB192 yes there was. more than once. but that's like relying on magic. very few people can do that, and if you have the wrong chips or misconfigure them, bad to be you. (and they prob cost at least as much as a normal ssd, so not like cheap cheap either)
<fl0_id> plus ideally you need at least another mac
<fl0_id> (for restoring which format the ssd)
<fl0_id> or maybe that was ram
<fl0_id> ssd was even more difficult maybe due to security chip
<JamesB192> Probably something to keep in mind for when the bits in the nvme start sticking.
* JamesB192 has a 13 yo imac.

<fl0_id> JamesB192 with an nvme?
<fl0_id> JamesB192 there is a bunch of those now. https://www.youtube.com/user/dosdude1/videos
<fl0_id> too adventurous for me tbh
<fl0_id> i would try it on cheaper hardware
<JamesB192> Tbh I'd try to outsouece it to not fatfinger it myself.
<JamesB192> Nvme chip in the mini yeah, imac has spinny drives.
