chaos_princess: To run Linux a GPU is not required, right? Framebuffer has been the strategy to get a display when doing a first port. Also, mac mini M4 could easily be used headless.. Perhaps Asahi Linux cannot keep up with Apple and the parts that still are unsupported on M1 require too much time. This eventually will erode the whole effort.. Backlog will keep piling-on. yes it can be done with a framebuffer, and that's what people messing around with M3 have been doing, but I dont think most users would want that

I understand the pressure felt from the wants of users.. With Linux I have not seen this much presure with respect to a port to an ARM based platform. (I've been doing Linux on ARM since 1996-ish on many ARM platforms..) Before, everyone was aware what it entails and that it requires lots of contributions. What surprises me most is that gaming seems to be one of the biggest motivations. I'm old-school so I mainy use Linux for development

and embedded-control. Sure, Workstation use too. Perhaps the Apple M series is the first ARM platform that gained this much attention and traction, the systems are beautiful too..

I'd be perfectly happy with a frame-buffer based Linux on mac mini M4. However, that's just me. I don't game. There are very few ARM systems that can compete with the CPU performance of M4 (or even M1 for that matter). That's what my main interest is in Asahi Linux. The ability to use a huge amount of ARM processing power in a small form factor.

also it was communicated by marcan etc that it was a conscious decision to not focus on m3 support directly to focus on other stuff first. which I'm fine with, I'd rather have sth more polished that is actually usable daily
