runxiyu_: when you boot another distro live that doesn't have selinux enabled or when you use init=/bin/sh trick and create a file then it doesn't get any additional xattr attributes required by selinux in strict mode.

hello everyone. I know that DP alt mode is not supported, but what about HDMI alt mode?
<j`ey>
same thing
<chaos_princess>
hdmi alt mode does not exist, it is all dp under the hood
<chaos_princess>
it does not exist outside of the specification, and 2 test devices
<allmazz>
may I know who working(worked) on dp alt mode support
<allmazz>
?
pb17 has joined #asahi

sv_en and jann_e worked on it

thank you!

<LarstiQ>
chaos_princess: do you think there will be more devices later or it's just a curiousity?
seacloud has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed>
LarstiQ: hdmi is patent encumbered, it is cheaper for chinesium adapter makers to just pay the picocents worth of royalties built in to the dp to hdmi converter chip unit price than it is for them to acquire the hdmi licences themselves
<chadmed>
(thats a no)
<chadmed>
hell, the hdmi ports on the macs themselves are behind a dp to hdmi converter chip. same goes for hdmi ports on nvidia and intel graphics cards
<chadmed>
amd fucked up by not doing that and now they cant support hdmi 2.1 on linux for rdna 3
<chaos_princess>
there will be no more devices, it is a failed standard that nobody ever cared about implementing
<chaos_princess>
if the marketing page is on web.archive.org, it is a very strong signal that whatever it was about is dead
<chadmed>
are hosts still even technically required to support it?
<chaos_princess>
host just straight up do not support it
<chadmed>
yeah
<LarstiQ>
that sounds rather definitive, cheers :)
<nicolas17>
it's also a popularity thing too
<nicolas17>
why add HDMI alt mode if the user is more likely to have (or be able to easily acquire) a DP-to-HDMI adapter already?
<nicolas17>
does anyone even sell passive adapters from USBC-HDMI-alt-mode to HDMI?
<chaos_princess>
nope
<chaos_princess>
does not make sense, since no hosts support it, you will just get constant returns
<nicolas17>
if supporting HDMI alt mode was cheaper than supporting DP alt mode, at this point laptop manufacturers would still not do it
<chadmed>
why support two things when you can support one thing that, from the users perspective, does both of the things anyway
<chadmed>
hdmi alt mode is just a waste of silicon and money
<chaos_princess>
i guess it is more expensive for laptop makers, since they do not make that choice in a way. all laptop chips are DP internally, so if you-the-laptop-maker wanted to support hdmi alt mode, there goes extra bom cost in soldering all the conversion chips to the laptop motherboard
chrisl has joined #asahi
<mort_>
I wonder if there's a technical reason why everyone uses DP internally or if it's just the licensing situation
<chaos_princess>
licensing, inertia, and corresponding dp versions are technically superior to hdmi
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chaos_princess>
if you already have an ip block that does dp, there is usually no reason to switch
<chaos_princess>
"everything is dp" is a bit hyperbolic, there is also mipi dsi in various places, and old devices use dvi, or whatever other weird formats were popular back then

Hello, I'm a M3 Max Macbook pro user. I understand that M3 isn't supported yet despite that I'd love to be an early adopter. I noticed two things about the M3 feature matrix, 1: the installer isn't supported and 2: the main display support is TBA. Does that mean that the display will just be black if I try to boot and also if the installer isn't supported, is there any documentation
<ACoolM3User>
on how to install asahi manually
<chaos_princess>
there is nothing to install yet
<chaos_princess>
if you try to force the installer to do it anyway, the whole thing will crash somewhere during early boot, and after a few loops kick you out to recovery
<ACoolM3User>
I see, that's rather disappointing Thanks for the help anyway, I'll try my luck with virtual machines

<chaos_princess>
you can try assembling a working copy of m1n1 (the bootloader) out of random m3-related patchsets that are floating around. From there, it is "just" writing drivers that are missing

I'm somewhat considering picking up a used M2 Pro/Max Mac Studio... but I've become a stickler for running displays at 120Hz, even just for desktop use. I know USB-C/Thunderbolt displays are still WIP, but is it possible to use HDMI 2.1 to get 4K 120Hz?

Ah, yeah, I wasn't paying very close attention to the specs because it's mostly an "I'm bored and I want something to play with, and I want a desktop that's powerful but quiet"
<nicolas17>
according to Apple, M2 Max supports "up to 8K at 60Hz (or 4K at 240Hz) over HDMI"
<nicolas17>
but idk what Asahi supports
melnary has joined #asahi
<nicolas17>
ah, Asahi: "resolutions/refresh rates beyond 4k 60Hz are not supported"

yeah that was in january. not sure if anything changed since then
<nicolas17>
btw the Mac mini with M2 Pro can do 4k/240Hz too (not in asahi)
<j`ey>
no change afaik. I believe it's basically the same as VRR
<DanaG>
My other idea is my Surface Pro 11, but that's also currently in a WIP state... and even in Windows, it won't do 4k 120, for some reason.
<nicolas17>
hmm can Linux VMs on macOS do >60fps? :D

I'm running Mac Studio M2 Ultra on a 240 Hz monitor right now, in 120 Hz setting (the monitor EDID isn't good for apple firmware, but 120 Hz works fine, in theory 240 Hz should too with most others out there except this Samsung, but thus I can't confirm)
<chaos_princess>
i believe it is specifically the internal monitor that refuses to do 120hz outside of the vrr mode
<j`ey>
ah

nicolas17 "it depends" probably. I had best results with vmware fusion and it doesn't feel like 120hz, but also didn't test ist...

like properly

I wish Apple still offered hardware with ECC memory. Even the "Inband ECC" that sacrifices a bit of capacity and bandwidth for error checking would be a big improvement.
<fl0_id>
and only my home monitor is 144hz, office is 60 anyway

Since USB-C/DisplayPort is out, external displays would have to be via HDMI, and I remember seeing stuff about needing support of "FRL" to do >60hz.
