<jernej> junari: thanks! this contains symbols which is great and it will help to improve understanding of DRAM driver
<jernej> apritzel ^
<jernej> it seems I was right regarding bit delay compensation and ODT config functions

<peterm6881> hi gamiee I plan to install everything to eMMC, I'm just trying to get a feel for the simplest way to multiple devices remotely
<peterm6881> to update multiple devices remotely
ftg has joined #linux-sunxi

<apritzel> peterm6881: (assuming with "firmware" you mean U-Boot and the DTB): you can just "dd" a firmware image file to the raw eMMC block device from Linux, then reboot
<apritzel> that has of course the danger of bricking the device, if the image was corrupt or something goes wrong during the write
<apritzel> for eMMC boot partitions you typically have two of them, so can switch, but there would need to be something that does that switch
<apritzel> (I mean triggers the switch)
<apritzel> those are general problems, of course, not sunxi or V3 specific

<bananicorn> Hello! I created an interactive script to easily create an Alpine Linux bootable uSD card for the Olimex A20-OLinuXino-Lime2
<bananicorn> Thought some people here might be interested
<bananicorn> Would appreciate any feedback if you try it :)
<bananicorn> It builds u-boot with the adjustments mentioned in the wiki depending on board revision
<bananicorn> All in a chroot for minimal dependencies and good portability

<mps> I wrote it about half year ago
<mps> bananicorn: is the separate u-boot needed for A20-OlinuxIno
<bananicorn> mps: Very interesting, thanks for sharing!
<bananicorn> I had not found it on my own
<bananicorn> The custom U-Boot is because of ethernet related issues, the different revisions of the A20 Lime2 use different chips
<bananicorn> And they need some different fine tuning, namely CONFIG_GMAC_TX_DELAY
<mps> understand, they are specific as I read earlier
<bananicorn> So I had some issues in the past without making custom changes
<bananicorn> And even though I wrote a full article on how to do it yourself, it is daunting for a beginner to build u-boot, do the partitioning and flashing etc
<mps> I debuged u-boot for teres-i and posted fix upstream about two releases ago
<mps> I have only teres-i and two A64-OlinuxIno boards so can test only on them
<bananicorn> I see :)
<bananicorn> You are using a sunxi specific kernel? I was not aware alpine had one, is it necessary for the teres/A64 boards?
<bananicorn> A20 got mainline support, so I am not familiar with these as I never tried it
<mps> bananicorn: yes, I started to build kernels based on SoCs instead 'one-for-all'
<mps> I maintain linux-edge kernel flavor on alpine, and I test often on A20 Bananapi boards
<bananicorn> I see, my knowledge is quite lacking on kernel level things (though I am trying to learn)
<bananicorn> So it is not something I have touched much
<bananicorn> Or at least had much success with :P
<bananicorn> A20 having mainline support is my saving grace
<mps> well, I'm using lamobo r1 (A20 SoC) as home server/router for years with mainline kernel
<bananicorn> It's a very versatile chip, also got somebody else addicted to A20 OLinuXinos for environment monitoring projects and server use
<bananicorn> I've also used mine as a home server
<mps> I tried A64-OLinuXino from olimex but I'm not satisfied with them
<bananicorn> What did you dislike?
<mps> boards are not stable, boot sometimes fail, some drivers are not stable
<bananicorn> Have you tried other A64 boards that did better?
<mps> olimex only supports debian and don't want to talk about problems with other distros
<bananicorn> Yeah that is a negative point
<mps> yes, I bought their teres-i notebook to play with A64, it is better and more stable than SBC I've bought
<anarsoul> mps: I haven't had any issues with pine64-lts and pinebook :)
<mps> anarsoul: I trust you, but I don't have no pines
<bananicorn> I got to go now, if anyone tries my script please let me know how it goes, I am thankful for any feedback :)

<bananicorn> also for general feedback on my probably terrible shell skills
<mps> oh yes, my shell scripting is also terrible, but it works somehow :)

<apritzel> so speaking of Olimex: why are there two different build targets and DTs for eMMC vs. no eMMC?
<mps> apritzel: I asked this somewhere long ago, and didn't get answer
<apritzel> the only reason I see is if people would connect something else to the PortC pins, but I guess they are not routed to connectors?
<apritzel> I would be curious to see what happens when someone boots a eMMC-less board with an eMMC config (I guess nothing, but curious to see the kind of error messages)
<mps> I only know that in some of these cases reading from mmc is error prone, but why have no idea
<mps> forgot exact combo
<apritzel> if someone looks for a fun U-Boot project: get rid of board/sunxi/gmac.c, and configure this like mainline Linux
