<DemiMarieObenour[m]> Is it FLOSS?
<emersion> yes -- but it's all in JS
<emersion> i had a purely static replacement, i should host it somewhere
<emersion> wanted to use it for wayland-protocols, but the bikeshedding wasn't worth it
soreau has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jadahl> one of the few times bikeshedding was only about actual colors
<emersion> you're welcome to take it over and handle the bikeshedding
<emersion> that's enough for me
<emersion> we should remove the website from the wayland-protocols governance thing, it's a bit laughable at this point
<jadahl> you mean the lack of anyone actually bothering creating it?
<emersion> i mean that it will never happen ever
<emersion> i actually sent patches
<jadahl> seems a bit premature to go on about it in that document at least
<emersion> a few years is a bit premature… ?
<jadahl> i mean talking about an idea and already creating politics for how to change it :P
<emersion> ah

<pq> I really do not want to remove the mention of the adoption website from the governance doc, because I want a constant painful reminder that we really need it.
<emersion> let's stop pretending it will happen magically…
<pq> no.
<pq> it will magically happen one day if it keeps being reminded of
<emersion> lol
* emersion has given up on this pipe dream
<pq> yeah, I've noticed. Too bad.
<pq> being a constant pain is how stuff migrates upwards in priority lists and eventually gets done, or someone new appears and takes it on which is also helped if there are notes around that stuff would be nice
<emersion> so far it's been 100% pain and 100% time lost
<emersion> 0% benefit
<pq> jadahl, unfortunately, without the idea of the adoption website, it would have been much harder to agree on wayland-protocols.
<pq> emersion, everything always is until it starts being used.
<emersion> the frustration level for wayland-protocols is just too high in general
<emersion> look at this graveyward in the merge request list
<emersion> *graveyard
<pq> yup
<emersion> the list of success stories is very short
<emersion> there are still 0 ext- protocols
<pq> I can't say I'm surprised.
<pq> why did no ext protocol land? I thought the criteria for those were very low.
<emersion> i think for many protocols, it's just easier to keep using the vendored ones
<pq> not even objections could stop ext protocols from landing
<emersion> for xdg-activation, i think a pain point was a very long back-and-forth between submitter and reviewer -- among other things, because it was the submitter's first protocol
<emersion> we have many idioms and unwritten rules
<pq> that's more understandable, and also it's xdg so different rules
<pq> if it's easier to maintain extension in various projects then maybe se should have a web site linking to all those... oh

<swick> pq: yeah the edid often just describes the "native" colorimetry and even that is often not reliable
ppascher has joined #wayland
<pq> swick, suddenly the claims "you can't do color management without profiling capabilities" makes a lot more sense.
<swick> eh, even with a profiling capabilities you have to make sure to not change any display settings
<pq> swick, I wonder, if we put a monitor into one of the standard HDR modes, could we then rely on the primaries and white point from EDID?
<swick> in theory we could even reset displays to their "native" state with DDC
<swick> pretty sure that the HDR mode EDID info is reasonable
co1umbarius has joined #wayland
<pq> why do you think so? :-)
<swick> but since they are "smart" modes they don't really give you any guarantee about the actual colors being displayed
<pq> I would not imagine most video sources to do anything with that, they just emit with the standard color space instead.
columbarius has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<swick> well, the smart HDR modes ignores your typical display settings
<swick> obviously the EDID values can still be bogus but at least if they are correct there is no user settings which invalidate them
