ChanServ changed the topic of #aarch64-laptops to: Linux support for AArch64 Laptops (Asus NovaGo TP370QL - HP Envy x2 - Lenovo Mixx 630 - Lenovo Yoga C630)
<flowriser> So here's a question, why is the grubaa64.efi from this image https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/lkocman:/aarch64-laptops/images/iso/openSUSE-Tumbleweed-NET-aarch64-Build4.745-Media.iso the only one that works to boot the kernel?
<HdkR> I could only get the fedora one working. The Ubuntu one seemingly did nothing
<flowriser> For me, if I don't have the right grubaa64.efi all it does is restart when it gets to boot the kernel
<flowriser> I was checking the OpenSuse scripts to see how they generate the efi file because it bugs me that I cannot reproduce it myself
<flowriser> HdkR, will take a look over the Fedora one as well
<flowriser> It seems the patches are not in upstream grub
<HdkR> Interesting
<flowriser> And I assume that Ubuntu only uses upstream
<flowriser> nope, they do have some patches but not as many as Fedora and not the ones we are interested in
<derzahl> steev: hey got any more ideas? I cannot get any of your 5.15's to boot. screen goes black right after loading the initrd. Just tried your latest an hour ago. compiled it with the config from an older 5.12 kernel which works good
<derzahl> (i have since stripped a lot out of my config so I wanted to try with one closer to the default)
<flowriser> derzahl, on what device are you trying to boot?
<derzahl> clk
<derzahl> flowriser: c630
<flowriser> derzahl, check this out https://github.com/Sonicadvance1/linux/issues/27 and grab the grubaa64.efi file that people there say it works
<derzahl> hm, thats pretty old though
<flowriser> I struggled for 2 weeks booting the kernel and it was the same; screen goes black after initrd and then reboots
<derzahl> its only the 5.15 kernels that are problematic
<derzahl> but i just made more problems for myself
<derzahl> i updated something and now its not trying to decrypt my boot drive
<derzahl> hah
<flowriser> I tested on 5.15 and now I'm on the 5.16 kernel right now and the only way the thing booted was with that specific efi file
<derzahl> wow, really?
<derzahl> ok
<flowriser> Also, am on a different device: acer spin 7
<derzahl> ill give it a shot
<derzahl> did older kernels work fine?
<flowriser> Older kernels did not have the drivers I was looking for so I didn't even try them
<flowriser> also these parameters for the kernel to see if you get any output: efi=novamap earlycon=efifb console=efifb earlyprintk=efi (I didn't get any because of the grub thingy, it just rebooted)
<derzahl> let me try
<steev> derzahl: are you sure you're using the correct dtb?
alpernebbi has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<steev> flowriser: he's got a c630 which is *very* supported, you however, have a device that doesn't even have anything in the kernel yet
alpernebbi has joined #aarch64-laptops
<steev> derzahl: there are and were a lot of changes from 5.12 to 5.15, it would be better to start from the distro_defconfig and pare it down instead of coming from 5.12 and hoping you got everything

<steev> derzahl: are you sure you're using the correct dtb?
<derzahl> steev: i know i tried to explicitly load the one that came with the kernel and it make no difference
<derzahl> but i ran "grub-install --dtb=" a long time ago and didnt have to specify one. maybe that overrides it?
<derzahl> i also reran grub-install with the 5.15 dtb
<derzahl> so it should be the one being used
<steev> i've never run that before so i have no idea
<derzahl> ill try reinstalling it without
<derzahl> any bigger updates since 5.14 that im missing out on?
<steev> audio fixes
<steev> though i think audio was working with 5.14, but with 5.15/5.16 we have proper audio (at least with the patches)
<steev> really though, it's just more and more stuff being in the kernel properly
<derzahl> i know ive used the sound a couple times. dont remember the kernel tho
<derzahl> so are there any novel arm64 laptops that are new to the linux world that you know of?
<steev> not really, no
<steev> there's the one flowriser has, that i hadn't heard of, but it's like 1600
<derzahl> damn
<derzahl> i had one of the very first apple m1 airs. it was super nice, especially for the price
<derzahl> last time i looked apparently that one project is getting really close to very functional linux
<derzahl> on the m1
<derzahl> i just couldnt stand to run OSX anymore
<derzahl> but apple did bring back the magsafe
<derzahl> if linux runs on it im buying
<HdkR> Technically Linux already runs on it in a VM :)

<derzahl> well *technically*, that would be linux running on the VM(hypervisor), while the hypervisor ran on the M1
<derzahl> :)
<steev> you can run linux on it, with asahi, but there are still quite a few things to work out
<derzahl> yeh, i just checked out the status
<steev> but it's *usable*, i wouldn't say daily driver usable - alyssa gave a presentation on it iirc (as in, she was using it to give the presentation... about it )
<derzahl> i checked quite a few months ago and I thought there almost had acceerated video
<derzahl> might be remembering wrong though
<derzahl> oh, thats good to know
<derzahl> i used osx almost exclusively for like 10 years
<derzahl> it just started getting so bad
<derzahl> a little at a time
<derzahl> but thats a nice laptop
<flowriser> steev, I got the acer spin 7 for 1k in Romania
<flowriser> Also, I peeked Samsung Galaxy Book S for 2600 RON (600 USD) at a pawn shop (they still have it)
<flowriser> I really wanted 5g on my laptop and initially wanted the HP Elite Folio (which I found for 1k as well on HPs website, but sadly they wouldn't deliver to Romania)

<alyssa> steev: the m1 is still my workstation machine, yeah
<flowriser> alyssa, that is great news! Great work so far, congratulations
<alyssa> it was mostly sven

<flowriser> I think the videos on youtube are great as well; I am not much of a low-level guy so for me it is very interesting to watch how he does things
<macc24> flowriser: i wouldn't call kernel low level
<flowriser> macc24, I am a webdev by day so basically anything is low-level for me xD
<amstan> macc24: lol, you should ask "full stack" developers what they think is low level
<macc24> amstan: coreboot.js
* amstan shivers
<flowriser> macc24, I actually googled coreboot.js to see if it's a real thing xD
<amstan> macc24: do not joke about this!
<steev> alyssa: is there power management support yet? i haven't checked in on the status since my vacation started (dec 12) - it ends jan 28, so i have some free time
<macc24> amstan: ok, no joke - will do coreboot.js seriously
<flowriser> If I see one more line of js in my spare time I will go insane
<steev> alyssa: or i guess, something akin to linux-meson.com for the asahi status
<steev> more specifically https://linux-meson.com/hardware.html
<steev> that matrix
<macc24> steev: if i have hardware to test m1 stuff on i'd maintain such a list ;)
<steev> macc24: don't look at me, i only got mine because of work
<flowriser> macc24, I rebelled against Apple so I got the acer spin 7 that no one else has
<flowriser> Although in retrospective, would've been much easier to boot linux on the m1
<steev> that tends to happen when you get a device not many people have :)
<flowriser> well, I think I'm the first one to boot linux on it so that's pretty cool

<flowriser> Well, apparently there is allot of work involved into creating a working grubaa64.efi
derzahl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<steev> do you really need to modify grub?
derzahl has joined #aarch64-laptops
<derzahl> what brings up the UEFI boot menu on the c630? isnt it f12 or fn-f12? I tried that plus "enter" "delete" and "f11"
<derzahl> just goes to a black screen...which is odd
