<leezu> Any ideas what may have broken audio on lazor sc7180 from 5.18 onwards including the latest 5.19-rc8? I tried bisecting between v5.17 and v5.18 but bisect ask me to try v5.17-rc3 and I wasn't able to make progress yet
hexdump0815 has joined #aarch64-laptops
<robclark> maybe audio is a thing that dianders tests from time to time? Or knows who might?

<steev> leezu: not sure but it broke for me between (at least, on 5.18 it still works) 5.19-rc1 and latest on the c630, i show "soc@0:sound msm-snd-sdm845: MultiMedia1: error getting cpu dai name" in devices_deferred
<leezu> Hm, I wonder if there is any persistent state. On my lazor 1, sound wasn't working with 5.19-rc8, nor did rolling back to 5.18.14 help restore sound, but after rolling back to 5.17.15 sound works. Then upgrading back to 5.18.14 sound still works. On my lazor 2 (which I used for various bisecting), now sound doesn't work on any of the above versions

<leezu> Sorry for the false alarm, after resolving a user-space issue sound works on all 3 versions on both devices. There was a weird race between pulseaudio and pipewire-pulse which appears to depend on the kernel version but also on if sound worked at time of last boot
<leezu> At least on the lazor 2.. pipewire-pulse wasn't installed on lazor 1 so for now it remains a mistery what broke the sound there
<amstan> leezu: does lazor have working sound now with pipewire?

<clover[m]> Do we know if those of us that didn't opt for the 5G model can attach an aftermarket modem to the x13s?
<steev> the answer there is.... maybe
<steev> should be able to, but dunno if it would require modifying the dtb
<steev> i mean, there's definitely a slot in there (scroll back a ways for HdkR's pictures of the internals of the thinkpad)
<HdkR> Just watch out, no idea what that second slot's physical format is
<HdkR> The M.2 drive didn't fit in to it when flipped over so I don't trust that :)
<HdkR> Need to do some pin counting
<steev> maybe it's an e key?
<steev> a, b, or e, assuming that it's also on the pcie bus, but maybe it's not
<steev> oh
<steev> it could be a socket 2
<HdkR> So regular M.2 NVMe drives are M key, it /could/ be be B or A key, Definitely not e
<HdkR> Socket 2?
<HdkR> Let me rip the back off of this laptop again and look more closelier
<steev> i was just looking through https://www.te.com/usa-en/product-CAT-M2-C76264.html
<steev> Socket 1: Connectivity socket for Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth®, NFC (near-field communication) or Wi-Gig.
<steev> Socket 2: WWAN/SSD/Other Socket that will support various WWAN+GNSS (global navigation satellite system) solutions, various SSD and SSD Cache configurations, and other yet-undefined solutions. (If the motherboard has a Socket 2 for a WWAN card and it is not in use, the socket may accommodate a B+M-keyed small M.2 SSD. Please refer to your motherboard documentation for details).
<steev> Socket 3: SSD Drive Socket with SATA or up to four PCIe lanes.
<steev> could possibly be b+m
<HdkR> Looks like it is B key
<HdkR> Counting pins anyway. If I tear the heat pipe off it may have some writing underneath about it
<steev> 6 pins?
<HdkR> Yea, 6 + 5
<steev> that does appear like it would be B
<HdkR> Has some writing on the connector itself, 21383r and LTK
<HdkR> WWAN1 next to it
<HdkR> It's a surprisingly nice device to tear down since all the screws are captive
<clover[m]> so it could work with something like this? https://www.amazon.com/EM7455-Wireless-Module-Latitude-Download/dp/B07S7Q8272
<clover[m]> Harrowing comment from Aaron G... (full message at https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/plKYZmKkHAEcabdVLVgVdSJU)
<AlexMarty[m]> small write up for what I did, there are a few things that need to be clarified in it though
<clover[m]> nice Alex.
<AlexMarty[m]> let me know what I need to add/questions you all have
<steev> i'm *pretty* sure there's no whitelist in the thinkpad's bios, but i have no idea.
<HdkR> steev: What does it mean when your kernel returns EOPNOTSUPP on pread64?
<steev> means the operation isn't supported
<HdkR> but.what. It's pread64
<HdkR> Wait a minute, is this some quirky fuse thing...
<steev> what exactly are you trying to do?
<HdkR> Read a file from a fuse mounted path
<HdkR> Might just be a bug in erofsfuse with fuse2 instead of fuse3
<steev> why is everyone using erofs these days
<HdkR> speed mostly. Squashfuse performance is bottom tier
<HdkR> https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1018829/179367306-a9c2b8b6-953e-42a0-a4b1-20f33f664150.png Some benchmarking I did showing squashfuse perf falling off after a few threads and not keeping up with erofs
<HdkR> Memory usage is also something like half of squashfs, and apparently read amplification is lower, but that's harder to measure since I run things over network a lot
<steev> why are you using eorfsfuse?
<HdkR> I need to mount a file from userspace. Can't expect users to give root permissions to mount things on the fly
<steev> ahh
<HdkR> Need some io_uring style improvements to FUSE :P
<steev> i wish fuse2 would go away
<HdkR> I'd be fine with just fuse3, doesn't harm me
<steev> should be able to do fuse3, i think there's something that pulls in fuse by default during an install
<steev> or at least, in kde it does
<HdkR> I need to figure out why erofs-utils didn't find fuse3 dev packages on debian. It worked fine under Ubuntu
<HdkR> But its also autotools which I'm garbage with
<HdkR> Yea, package installed fine, erofs-utils just didn't pick it up
<steev> oh
<HdkR> Also erofs-utils debian package didn't enable erofsfuse :/
<steev> yeah, i noticed that
<steev> dang
<steev> part of it is... not wanting to put tons of effort into the 5.19 stuff since it's not what will wind up in 5.20+
<HdkR> I'd be pulling your kernel anyway since I don't really care about what the version is
<clover[m]> HdkR: do you have an dock or external monitor set up?
<HdkR> For my dev board yes.
<HdkR> I usually just ssh in though
<clover[m]> for x13s i mean
<HdkR> oh no, just plugged in to ethernet adapter there
<HdkR> If Type-C external display gets wired up then I'll hook it up though
<clover[m]> does touchscreen work with gnome?
<HdkR> Dunno, I don't use touch screen
<steev> don't use, or don't have?
<HdkR> I don't see it in lsusb
<steev> it's on i2c not usb
<HdkR> Claims to have a touchscreen from lenovo.com
<steev> if you have touchscreen, can you send the dmesg output please?
<steev> HdkR: oh, can you build rc8 please, and then do it
<HdkR> Fetching
<steev> we might have the wrong address
<steev> 2c is the touchpad, 68 is the keyboard. i2c4 0x10 is *supposed* to be the touchpad, or at least, was guessed to be
<steev> clover[m]: i thought you said you don't have a touch screen version?
<clover[m]> I do have a touch screen. Want dmesg from iso?
<steev> sure
<clover[m]> BTW it's patch Tuesday
<steev> anything from lenovo? aside from 9 patches to the camera
<clover[m]> Yes bios update
<steev> oh interesting
<clover[m]> They heard us talking about aftermarket modems
<steev> oh nice, they actually give a changelog for the thinkpad
<steev> TCO icon removed (woo?), removed date/time page from bios setup, trackpoint/touchpad FW update driver enabled, fix nvme boot option does not show product model number on WOS, fix track point could not be disabled when lid close
<clover[m]> what does TCO do and why did they remove it?
<steev> TCO Certified is a sustainability certification for IT products with the aim of promoting an environmentally and socially responsible product life cycle.
<steev> most stuff is soldered on, so i doubt they'd get TCO
<steev> otoh
<steev> the X1 Carbon is all soldered down, and had it, so maybe?
<steev> it's possible they just didn't do the certification
<robclark> I guess you need to talk framework into doing a snapdragon laptop?
<clover[m]> Alex Marty: Do you mind showing your lsblk?
<steev> robclark: oh that would be hot
<steev> hm
<steev> can you show sudo i2cdetect -y 4
<steev> if you have i2c tools installed
<clover[m]> There is also the 2022-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 arm64-based Systems (KB5015882) available
<steev> i don't have that one, but i probably applied it a few days ago
<steev> ah yeah, it was released on the 21st and i did updates on the 22nd
<clover[m]> does your start menu still work when you press win key?
<steev> yes
<steev> that's literally how i use it
<clover[m]> cool, there were some reports of it breaking after that update.
<steev> [ 7.068639] input: hid-over-i2c 04F3:2FE6 Touchscreen as /devices/platform/soc@0/9c0000.geniqup/990000.i2c/i2c-1/1-0010/0018:04F3:2FE6.0002/input/input2
<steev> it's definitely there for HdkR
<HdkR> Looks like I can poke at the screen now
<HdkR> and now to never use that feature again
<robclark> just don't poke hard enough to crack it :-P
<HdkR> Curious that they put a touchscreen on it without glass
<HdkR> Panel mooshing fun
<clover[m]> i wonder if touchscreen models drain battery faster
<clover[m]> i know that used to be the case, but my last touchscreen laptop was in 2013
<HdkR> It's hardware and it is pulling power, so definitely
<AlexMarty[m]> <clover[m]> "Alex Marty: Do you mind showing..." <- Yeah one sec

<clover[m]> steev: my BIOS update didnt appear to work. got promped to reboot, rebooted, but still showing TCO and still showing that i need to update in Vantage app
<clover[m]> did your update work?
<steev> are you on mains?
<steev> they won't update the bios if not plugged in
<clover[m]> yes it's plugged directly into the wall with the charger it came with

<AlexMarty[m]> Here is lsblk output
<HdkR> Dang, this X13s can heatsoak a full CPU burn
<HdkR> 73C at its hottest I seen
<AlexMarty[m]> Yeah mine overheated and shut off when I was compiling the kernel. I had to put a fan on it
<HdkR> I hadn't seen that, but I'm also in a nice AC managed room
<HdkR> Actually, I just reapplied thermal paste since I took the heatpipe off. Might be skewed compared to stock :P
