on -next, the normal config we use ends up with a not working nvme
<mani_s>
steev, I can provide a config that happens to work on 6.1-rc2
<mani_s>
well, not all the time ;)
<steev>
6.1 rc6 works fine for me (as long as you pass the deferred_device_timeout=30 - which despite popular opinion does not slow the boot down)
<steev>
occasionally you get the nvme timeout thing, but not every time

o/ I got my hands on a c630 today! It has an old debian install with Linux 5.11-rc2, I'm trying to understand what the boot process is with devicetree and grub so I can get something a bit newer running...
<calebccff>
could anyone point me to the most recent docs?
<ndec>
calebccff: it's using DTB. on c630, we were using ACPI , no DTB, only for the very first boot, then we would run the debian installer from USB (the kernel boots from ACPI at this point), install Debian, and then install DTBLoader which is a custom EFI app that is inserted in the boot chain, between the firmware, and Grub, which loads the DTB. next boot the kernel will pick the dtb.
<ndec>
it should at least give you an idea about what the boot process is.
<ndec>
note that on x13s, we embedded the DTBLoader in the debian CDimage we release, so even the first boot was done with DTB.
<ndec>
there is a theory that says that the same installer should work on c630 too :)
<calebccff>
ndec: right, thanks! DTBLoader has already been installed on this unit (it boots debian w/ grub) but I can't seem to get grub to run from a USB stick
<ndec>
the DTBs are picked by dtbloader in the EFI partition (in the /dtb' folder we put there)
<ndec>
have you tried the original installer image?
<calebccff>
if the EFI partition doesn't have that folder could that cause it to silently fall back to the default boot option?
<ndec>
i don't know.. maybe mani_s ?
aceridus has joined #aarch64-laptops
<mani_s>
calebccff, if dtbloader couldn't find the correct dtb in EFI partition, then it will just skip loading dtb and proceed to grub
<mani_s>
in that case, the default boot option would be ACPI
<calebccff>
oh, it seems like it fails to boot from USB long before dtbloader
<mani_s>
but you can still pass the dtb using "devicetree = <board>.dtb" in grub menu
<mani_s>
calebccff, before dtbloader?
<calebccff>
Like, the UEFI doesn't want to run by bootloader
<mani_s>
calebccff, oh, so how does the boot looks like?
<mani_s>
can you share a video or something?
<calebccff>
mani_s: I whack F12, choose my USB stick and it dumps all the dtbloader output and then loads grub... It's almost definitely and issue with the bootable USB I made
<mani_s>
calebccff, did you use the installer linked in the doc shared by ndec?
<calebccff>
not yet, will give that a go

calebccff: what size usb?
<steev>
if the c630 has the latest BIOS from windows (feb 2019? iirc), it won't boot off anything > 32GB
<steev>
at least, not without some weird tricks
<steev>
aka, a 32GB and a > 32GB but both using the same rootfs uuid, then yanking the 32gb out before the kernel tries to load the rootfs
<steev>
additionally, you can add a line under the kernel/initramfs with `devicetree /path/to/dtb/on/the/partition.dtb` in the grub menu
<calebccff>
it's only an 8GB stick, that's good to know though ;P
<steev>
the c630 is my goto device, i absolutely love it

calebccff: it's by no means definitive, but this is the 6.0 i run on mine - https://github.com/steev/linux/tree/linux-6.0.y (i have to disable dp, and can't look into it til after our next release)
