<steev> same way you would on any system
<steev> you just need to tell it to boot the external drive each time

<adamcstephens> right, but doesn't the recovery just wipe the internal drive? it's not a typical windows installation wizard
<steev> i can't recall if you can choose the device to install to or not since i've only ever had the recovery usb and internal; and i've never done it on the thinkpad

<jglathe> the Lenovo recovery... yes I created it no I never had to use it. Can't remember anyway. Replaced the internal SSD with an 1TB one (odd form factor 2240, single sided) and on that occasion took pictures of the SoC https://photos.app.goo.gl/Utfo3mL2GGggKz5H9

<jglathe> You can boot from USB, but try that with Windows, might be quite an experience. With Linux it works, but for a mobile device it's better it boots as desired from internal SSD (it's faster, too)

<f_> Does windows even work on AArch64?
<f_> I thought it was x86(_64)-only..
<HdkR> X13s ships with Windows
<HdkR> There have been quite a few Windows On ARM devices over the years
<HdkR> It has supported more architectures than just x86 and arm even
<HdkR> Like Itanium
<HdkR> And Alpha, and MIPS, and PowerPC to a lesser known extent
<HdkR> Windows 11 even dropped support for 32-bit x86 and ARM processors. Needs to be x86-64 or ARMv8 now

<f_> HdkR: Guess I'm living under a rock. Full official Windows on Arm is news to me.
<jglathe> Many run Windows on Arm on M macs in Parrallels. And its faster than on bare metal available hw
<zdykstra> Does anybody have a working/complete of the x13s recovery image? The download fails halfway through for me.
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]> <zdykstra> "Does anybody have a working/..." <- When you download it, it is immediately written to usb, and there are no files left on the disk? I’ve been restoring Windows with Linux for a while now.
<jglathe> I have that stick somewhere
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]> Or can the stick be made into iso?

<jglathe> 34GB FAT
<jglathe> I'll save the image and do an xz
<jglathe> nice, 200MB/s+ transfer from stick, guess the performance issues with USB are resolved
<zdykstra> let me know if you need a place to upload it to, jglathe
<zdykstra> is the m.2 drive slot on the x13s PCIE 4.0 or 3.0 ? the PSREF for the laptop lists it as 3.0, but says it's populated with a 4.0 drive and that doesn't seem right.
jglathe__ has joined #aarch64-laptops
<jglathe__> my X13s is a 21BX001LGE, I hope its compatible enough
<zdykstra> I bet it's close enough to not matter
<jglathe> ETA says 25 mins for xz, upload will take some minutes too
<zdykstra> that's amazing, thank you for sharing jglathe
<jglathe> no prob
<jglathe> how can I see

<Jasper[m]> <zdykstra> "is the m.2 drive slot on the..." <- I'm pretty sure they mention in the same breath that it runs at a lower speed hahaha
<Jasper[m]> But yes, it's 3.0
<jglathe__> Actually the SSDs in Volterra are 4.0 as shipped, but the nvme slot is 3.0
<zdykstra> that's silly, heh
<jglathe__> on X13s: LnkSta:Speed 8GT/s, Width x4
<jglathe> on Volterra: LnkSta:Speed 8GT/s (downgraded), Width x4
<zdykstra> I was hoping to pick up a Volterra for cheap, but there aren't very many on the used market
<jglathe> nope
<Jasper[m]> zdykstra: It's restocked in the US
<jglathe> I paid 500 for a used one
<Jasper[m]> Was thinking to proxy it to NL
<jglathe> @Jasper[m], oh? with SQ3 or xle80100?
<Jasper[m]> jglathe: SQ3, x elite isn't out yet
<jglathe> @zdykstra, file is uploading, link follows
<jglathe> 12,7GB compressed
<zdykstra> that's pretty decent
<jglathe> interesting that they restock Volterra. I mean, I won't complain. How is that EL2 hack going, then
<_[m]1> they won't rerelease volterra ng?
<_[m]1> for the windows iso, I contacted lenovo once, they sent me a download link
<HdkR> EL2 hack?
<Jasper[m]> _[m]1: Maybe, sometime, who knows
<jglathe> to get kvm support, booting the kernel on EL2
<HdkR> Well yea. Someone is working on hacking it?
<jglathe> now it "only" works with docker and lxd, but that's decent, too
<jglathe> @travmurav[m], afaik
<HdkR> Neat

<zdykstra> good timing, I was just getting ready to run some errands!
<jglathe> :B
<zdykstra> I'll roll the dice, Google ... https://somebits.link/u/p/d65c98bbd4/stream
<jglathe> for me it's shutdown for the night, need to work tomorrow
<jglathe> :)))
<zdykstra> https://somebits.link/u/p/37d76d5a4d/stream it's cursed, I tell you
<jglathe> what
<zdykstra> gets about 500MB in to the download for me and then it fails, heh
<zdykstra> I'll try later tonight, assuming the link is still valid
<jglathe> hmm some limiter somewhere?
<jglathe> will be
<jglathe> I'll keep it up for few weeks or so
<zdykstra> just tried in another browser, failed at the same point. Weird.
<Jasper[m]> @zdykstra where are you based, if you're looking for a Volterra?
<zdykstra> US - Chicago
<zdykstra> I just don't want to pay $600 for it, that's all
<jglathe> that's the current rate I'd say. My first was €699
<Jasper[m]> zdykstra: That's entirely fair
<Jasper[m]> jglathe: Yep same, I kinda hope they restock the EU too
<Jasper[m]> I'd buy another one
<Jasper[m]> I was looking at a different box at first, but this seems like a way better choice to have
<jglathe> Hoping to get my first RK1s delivered in 2 weeks or so. But getting them up to speed will take a while, and maybe its not the way to go. I'll try some things with it though
<jglathe> waiting on them for a long tme now, though
<Jasper[m]> Ah the rk3588 som
<jglathe> yep
<jglathe> also with NPU
<jglathe> so, sort of the future
