so, i am currently running nixos on my x13s and after updating my channels i cannot build jhovold's kernel due to some error in ladybird (whatever that is)
<mynery[m]>
can i safely switch to mainline or do i have to expect degradation?
<bamse>
mynery[m]: i'm running clean v6.12-rc on my x13s...
<bamse>
not sure why you would be able to build upstream if you can't built johan's tree though...and if you're referring to the nixos kernel as "mainline", then it would depend on their kernel config
<bamse>
well, i was running clean v6.12-rc, now i run the arch kernel
<mynery[m]>
i will see if that still occurs. i just started a built this morning and went to work

hey, excited to get my hands on a HP OmniBook X 14 next week if the compile speeds of X1E will be anywhere close to my current 5950X workstation as seen in https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/compare/8162996?baseline=8642956. I'm also planning to bringup support for a new distro, anything I should know? I've messed with mainline on qcom phones
tobhe_ is now known as tobhe
<JensGlathe[m]>
Omnibook X14 is supported by Ubuntu Concept X1E 24.10, working well. There are minor issues with 6GHz WLAN (I guess because I have not messed with regulatory data yet). I suggest to follow this distro. I will try to upstream the dt soon, and I hope we can resolve sound, dp altmode, brightness (function keys), keyboard lighting too.
<JensGlathe[m]>
Oh and the thing is fast.

JensGlathe[m]: neat yeah I saw it was one of the supported ones and I got a good deal on it too as a cherry on top :) I'm expecting it to be fast based on the bench results, certainly want to see it for myself as it'd be a boon to my ARM compile workflows namely never having to deal with cross-compile hacks for random software while being fast
<deathmist>
are there issues with the SSD when it comes to performance? I saw some review mentioning it was the slowest at compiling firefox from source and blaming it on the SSD which could be replaced
<deathmist>
(slowest as in slowest of the compared laptops which too had X1E)
<JensGlathe[m]>
it is a Solidigm P41 Plus NVMe SSD
<JensGlathe[m]>
LnkSta:Speed 16GT/s, Width x4
<JensGlathe[m]>
haven't seen speed issues here, but maybe I'm not that sensitive to it. Ubuntu Kernel builds really fast, faster than the R9-3900X equivalent build box
<JensGlathe[m]>
and the local SSD here is faster than on the build box

JensGlathe[m]: would you mind trying an openssl build and grabbing the "time" outputs from https://paste.c-net.org/jyxkdgmdbtr5? I'm sure I'm not gonna get a perfect comparison to the environment I'd be using etc but it'll be interesting for now I'll do a lot more testing myself once I actually have it on-hand as well

awesome thanks, exactly around what I expected and closely matching my 5950X which I got a native build real 0m21.450s, user 7m58.860s, sys 1m59.981s (with likely quite a deviation in the compiled source) and an aarch64 cross-build total was 0m24.765s

yep, wild really. it's a somewhat old-gen Ryzen 9 now but still this is very impressive to me

<deathmist> "awesome thanks, exactly around..." <- on geekbench x1e78100 matched my undervolted and overclocked 5950x at 120-ish watts, with memory @3800mt/s
<anozetsubou>
JensGlathe[m], my latitude 7455 does have the X62 5G modem, I don't think any other laptop does
<anozetsubou>
but I will try your suggestion later today

JensGlathe[m]: btw the wlan card is a qcom one right? is it also replaceable like it seemed on a mobo pic? I saw some conflicting info about that online with some spec sheet saying it has an intel AX211 but then a video with task manager showed qcom for someone else so lol
<deathmist>
or maybe the video was from some other model X1E device, can't remember for sure
<travmurav[m]>
afaiu all x1e come with an ath card, most of the devices have soldered on module/fully integrated, few have a card
<JensGlathe[m]>
I have a qcom 6900 (or so) in it, wcn6855
<JensGlathe[m]>
There are also models with wcn7850 (wifi 7) so we‘ll see
<deathmist>
sure, hopefully it's not a nightmare like ath10k-snoc wcn3990 which still gives me nightmares having tried to deal with it before for so long with mainline
* travmurav[m]
has never had any problems with wcn3990 on his 7c
<deathmist>
this was on msm8998, a smartphone even not an actual laptop but still :p
<JensGlathe[m]>
The one in the X14 is the only WCN6855 I have that behaves well, no garbled rx handler callbacks (which the others occasionally do)
<travmurav[m]>
deathmist: yeah I kinda assume it's about phones when someone mentions "nightmares" and "mainline", though probably just because laptops aren't that common yet xD

robclark: I think I've looked at a few mainboard photos and what I remember is: MS has fully integrated (soldered on board) wifi chips; most boards have "m.2 bga" thing soldered, hp (and maybe some other one?) has m.2 card, all of which were qcom
<travmurav[m]>
maybe there was some other thing apart from MS that had fully integrated wifi
