<sven>
it’s rather Linux specific and hasn’t been worked on in a long time
<sven>
it’s mostly just aligning things to 16k and adjusting offsets in scatter/gather lists

Hi, I needed help regarding the partition setup for booting m1n1 stage 1. I Just want to setup a MacOS stub partition without linux manually. Is there a mode in asahi install script to do that? If someone can give the exact commands for creating and seting up volumes in an apfs container partition, that would be really helpful. Thanks
<j`ey>
mattie: the installer can just install m1n1 only
<mattie>
I am trying to do it on an m3 device with my patched m1n1, would the installer be able to setup the stub if give it a compatile IPSW?
<j`ey>
one way of creating a stub, if you dont care about wasting some space, is just doing a 2nd macOS install first
<chadmed>
mattie: youd need to patch the installer but its quite easy

Thanks j`ey, I could try installing macos in a seperate partition and use it's boot partition as a stub, yup it will waste some space....
<j`ey>
that's how we did it before the installer
<j`ey>
but as chadmed said, it might not be too hard to patch the installer
<mattie>
Ok thanks, I am okay with patching the installer, It's just that i dont have another mac to dfu restore if something goes wrong with python script due to my coding errors
<j`ey>
you can dfu from linux too, but tbh just making a second install is the easiest, not like it's permanent
<mattie>
Really? I thought Apple configurator was the only way... I'll look it up thanks

Oh I have another idea, I can test the script using The hypervisor framework (UTM or something) if the stub partition is created correctly, I will run the script on bare metal to boot m1n1
<mattie>
Ofcource m1n1 will crash in a VM, but i'll be sure my stub is setup correctly if i can boot to recovery...
<j`ey>
I dont know if that will work or not

<leio>
can't the normal installer be used, have that fail, and then in recovery go through the m1n1 stage1 reinstall step?

<j`ey>
I think you need a differnt IPSW for newer fw?

<leio>
ah.
<jannau>
and you need to add the m3 devices as supported
<jannau>
I would recommend a second macos install in a new apfs subvol for working on unsuported devices
<jannau>
you want that to trace what macos is doing

<sven>
yeah, secondary install is what i'd recommend as well

Hi there. My name is Jan and I am a software dev looking into ways of contributing to the Asahi project as I very much prefer Linux to MacOS, but love the hardware the M-chip Macbooks are equipped with. Any issues that are a good starting point?
