How long is the battery lifetime of Asahi Linux in general? I want to use Asahi but I have a problem with electricity.
<chadmed>
AndrewYu: #asahi-alt but it works perfectly fine, j ann au and i put a decent whack of effort into making sure it does :)

<khant>
marcan: I already found that post after I asked the question. I am sorry and understand the situation.
<chadmed>
but yeah the screens are very thirsty, but its probably something we can offset once VRR is all working properly across the full stack
<marcan>
I'm hoping once we understand DCP better we can reduce refresh power, also framebuffer compression should noticeably help there
<marcan>
but the backlight still swamps that even
<marcan>
it's kind of silly/sad how many people throw around battery lifetime numbers and never mention the screen brightness... they mean absolutely nothing without that data point
<khant>
Just curious: I had ever coded in linux. If I want to, where to start? Just search things on google or any suggestions, resources?

marcan: is GPU power usage also order of magnitude smaller than backlight? I'm interested as it would mean I can avoid doing CPU compositing fallback in a compositor, and always throw the scene at GPU.

dottedmag: I'd would expect GPU composition to save energy compared to CPU composition and unless the backlight is very dim to be mostly noise next to the backlight

<pepis>
I had a couple of probably dumb questions.
erso has joined #asahi
<pepis>
After installing asahi linux, I wanted to use csrutil on my macos partition to try out yabai. After telling csrutil what partition I want, I got the message that <UUID> is not associated with the Recovery, so the operation could not be completed.
<pepis>
Is csrutil expecting the macos partition to be marked primary boot? If so, how would I return boot priority to it for this purpose?
<ChaosPrincess>
yes, it does, if you want to mark it as primary, reboot into macos and use the startup disk menu in settings
<pepis>
Got it
<pepis>
second question is that my Alarm install, both when freshly installed and after updating, doesn't handle brightness
<pepis>
I either get maximum screen brightness, or screen off when using KDE's brightness options
<ChaosPrincess>
you might need edge kernel for that, but im not sure
<pepis>
i installed linux-asahi-edge and restarted just in case
<pepis>
I'm tempted to throw values at /sys/class/backlight/gpio-bl/brightness but I'm worried I'll cause myself more problems
<ChaosPrincess>
that one is the on-off

Hello, does asahi linux support RHEL distro?
<j`ey>
sa6ta6ni6c: it's the other way around
<j`ey>
does RHEL support asahi (probably not)
<sa6ta6ni6c>
Well, there is aarch64 version of RHEL
<j`ey>
you need to at least build asahi versions of the kernel, and u-boot
<sa6ta6ni6c>
Makes sense, thank you.

i bet fedora is making this project to crawl to a stop with all it's validation, commitee, and all nonsense.. with fedora everything is getting slower, and older
<marcan>
nsklaus: you are way, way off base there, and utterly baseless speculation like that is not nice
<marcan>
as I said already, we are targeting 13.5 for the new machines, so until 13.5 final comes out there will be no asahi release for m2pro+, and that has absolutely nothing to do with Fedora
<nsklaus>
i didn't know that was the plan

i was wondering what it was, thanks for telling
<nsklaus>
and about fedora, sorry, i don't like that distro much i'm affraid. tastes and colors..
<nsklaus>
why this wasn't part of a tweet
<nsklaus>
?
<nsklaus>
(or whatever the word the use on mastodon to define an article post)
<nsklaus>
*theY use
<marcan>
because that's an internal technical decision, not something users need to be concerned with
Jamie has joined #asahi
<marcan>
people need to learn to be patient and wait for stuff to be released and stop pestering developers about it, *hint hint*
<nsklaus>
people can become patient when they know what they wait for, and an approximate time length
<marcan>
that's not how open source projects work
<marcan>
and *especially* not how reverse engineering oriented open source projects work
<marcan>
and people need to learn to live with that and just wait
<nsklaus>
and i wouldn't consider what i said as "pestering" it's a bit harsh of a consideration, especialy without proper reasons
jjido has joined #asahi
<ChaosPrincess>
nsklaus: you working at ibm? :P
<marcan>
you immediately attempted to blame something that has nothing to do with the issue, that's beyond pestering
<marcan>
that's outright rude
<nsklaus>
i can have an opinion still, can i ?
<nsklaus>
or would that be considered rude too ?
<marcan>
that's not an opinion, that's baseless speculation, and no, you can't do that here because it goes against our CoC
<nsklaus>
i haven't signed any contract
<nsklaus>
i just adopt civil behavior that's all
<nsklaus>
and i'm allowed my own opinion even if it is wrong and baseless
<marcan>
by being here you implicitly accept our CoC. if you do not, you are free to leave.
<marcan>
again, what you did right there is not an opinion
<marcan>
it was baseless speculation
<marcan>
and an accusation
<marcan>
and I am not going to tolerate that kind of nonsense here
<nsklaus>
people having an opinion ?
<marcan>
again, that's not an opinion, it's an accusation based on baseless speculation
<nsklaus>
i can perfectly think fedora makes things go slower

how many mods do you have?

there's a couple beyond the ones with the @ right now (not everyone puts it on all the time)
<Soni>
oh, that's a decent amount then :o
mikelee has joined #asahi
<marcan>
and I'm going to be very clear here: the FOSS world has had more than enough of fan/hater distro politics, and this is no place for that. you can use whatever distro you want, and you can talk about legitimate technical issues with various distros, but this is *not* the place for gratuitous hate and especially not made up accusations.
<marcan>
our goal is to support all distros and *especially* all distros that choose to work with us, and if you don't like any particular one then just don't use it and keep your opinions to yourself.
<nsklaus>
so it's double plus good then ?
<nsklaus>
(i'm not super skilled in double speak yet)
<bsandro>
marcan: slight offtopic but tyvm for that iloud micro recommendation, awesome little things those are
<jannau>
nsklaus: please try to reflect why you were kicked. I recommened to read your statement about fedora again and maybe replace fedora with something else
<nsklaus>
yes, modern times, new laws, that make no sense, censure, high morale argument given all that
<nsklaus>
things were more relaxed a few decades ago
<jannau>
nsklaus: please go away or at least remind me to never help you again
<Soni>
we wish we could get an M1 and try to help out but it's still too modern to be affordable...
<zeromind>
last time i checked, the price difference between M1 and M2 were insignificant, for the smol models of the mini at least
<nsklaus>
Soni: i think i saw good sales prices on amazon and things like that, recently
<Soni>
are used M1s any good? not like we're in the right places to find those either...
<Soni>
(but we could try)
<zeromind>
waiting on how asahi turns out on those until later this year, might get an M2 mini then
<nsklaus>
ChaosPrincess: certainly it's me yes. but note that it is not me would dug the article and posted it. i just stand by it if asked. yes it's me. and i'm proud of it.
<ChaosPrincess>
kk, should i keep digging?
