anyone have linux FS encrypted with luks on m1? Interested to hear experience, especially performance impact
<as400>
I do. I don't think impact is any large number
<mps>
as400: thanks for info

hi. i managed to compile hl2 for asahi. and it runs very well... until asahi doesnt. asahi crashes randomly. idk why. when asahi doesnt crash game runs very well and i got 180 average. https://www.reddit.com/r/AsahiLinux/comments/14aarb3/half_life_2_on_asahi_linux_native/ here is a post i made at reddit. game creates log file so that may help why whole desktop stops responding
<dottedmag>
180fps sounds kinda slow. is it software rendering?
<tabby>
is it? i will check again in a bit

<dottedmag>
well, it's a 20-year old game, and GPUs back then were quite slow.
<tabby>
im gonna thest completely max min settings with fpsmax set to 999 to see what it is capeable of
<tabby>
if asahi doenst crash again
<tabby>
test*

mps: I have btrfs straight on luks. Without lvm. I guess setup like luks --> lvm --> ext4 would be slower.

<as400>
I did not take any scientific measures though.
<mps>
as400: also I'm thinking to setup it without lvm
<cy8aer>
mps: And I have luks->lvm->btrfs/and swap and I do not have any low speed experience. Firefox opens in less than a half second
<cy8aer>
Really fast data moving/copying experience
<mps>
for now I have script to use plain cryptsetup for home. performance are quite fine

I use aes-xts:essiv with sha256
<as400>
Yeah, those apple nvme drives are fast.

And the cpus too (for en/decrypting)
<mps>
tested with dd ... oflag=direct
<as400>
Cpus don't have neon extensions, right ?
<j`ey_>
they do
<as400>
Just checked. Why is neon extension not reported in /proc/cpuinfo ?
<mps>
cat /proc/crypto

as400: do you know for guide somewhere how to setup it without lvm. all I found is about using lvm
roxfan has joined #asahi
<mps>
hm, maybe I should use usb for boot and then have all simple
<cy8aer>
And I learned that today it is not needed to put swap and the root into an encrypted lvm. It is also possible to create two encrypted partitions for each root and swap because actual cryptsetup scripts for initrd are able to decrypt more than one partition with the passphrase.
<cy8aer>
(if one needs a swap partition)
<mps>
for long time I don't have swap on any machine, even on servers with 1GB RAM
<mps>
(thanks to musl libc and trimmed alpine pkgs)
<cy8aer>
When I built my asahi setup I expected to have a suspend on disk (and therefor I reserved 32GB).
<cy8aer>
And I do not know if sdisk will implemented or really needed.
<mps>
I used s2disk about 12 years ago when I had intel machines and debian
<cy8aer>
(be)
<cy8aer>
So then good luck with the bare encryped btrfs.
<mps>
with brtfs luck is needed anyway, encrypted or not
<cy8aer>
hm, if you regularly scrub and balance it should be stable.
<bluetail>
mps I do a fsck each time boot
Guest3175 has quit []
<mps>
bluetail: on all my machines I use f2fs because they have sdcard or ssd, except on m1 I use ext4 because f2fs doesn't work with 16K PAGE_SIZE

<bluetail>
thats a good idea I think
<mps>
but 'safe' FS for me is daily backup
