yeah, the broadcom driver is *seriously* behind in modern WiFi features
ourdumbfuture has quit [Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<marcan>
we really could use a volunteer to help improve it (seeing as the guy from Broadcom who is supposed to be the maintainer isn't actually doing much)
<marcan>
I can take care of new hardware bring-up and basic "stuff is broken" cases, but I can't really spend more of my time adding all the missing features right now :(
ourdumbfuture has joined #asahi
<marcan>
most of the functionality is present in various random out-of-tree Android vendor dump kernels, so it isn't really reverse engineering, just porting features from those giant mess source dumps into the proper upstream driver
<marcan>
(the Android driver is a completely different one, so you have to rewrite/reengineer all of the code, but at least you can copy the firmware interface definitions and figure out how it works from that)

Hi
<fredsco>
Hello Everyone,
<fredsco>
I've been missing the Linux experience and initially thought about switching my M1 PRO for a MacBook AIR 2017. However, I'm now leaning towards giving Asahi Linux a shot. After going through its feature support, I'm a bit concerned about the Thunderbolt and DP status being "Work in Progress/To Be Announced." This makes me wonder if I'll be able to connect my MacBook to my dual monitors and utilize debug probes like t
<fredsco>
he SEGGER J-Link.
<fredsco>
Has anyone tried this setup or perhaps uses their M1 PRO with Linux regularly (maybe as a dual boot)?
<fredsco>
Appreciate any insights!
<psykose>
if they use thunderbold/dp then they don't work

bummer, I have two LG 27UP850N they indeed use the thunderbold cable, but they both also support HDMI, would HDMI work on the main port and a thunderbolt to HDMI dongle as well ?
<PaulFertser>
Segger J-Link is a regular USB High Speed device, not thunderbolt.
<maz>
and the USB-C connection is very likely to be DP, not TB...
<maz>
(for the monitors)
<sven>
only the main hdmi output works right now no matter what dongles you connect
<sven>
(On the Mac mini)
<sven>
on MacBooks no external display can be connected right now

Paul would the J-LInk still work with an adapter? sorry for the stupid question lol.
<PaulFertser>
fredsco: sorry, sven can answer, not me. And this question is about any USB HS device, not just J-Link I guess.
<PaulFertser>
fredsco: also, are you already using OpenOCD on macOS and does it support everything you need?
<sven>
if it’s a usb device it’ll probably work
<ellyq_>
J-Link sounds like a DisplayLink device, not sure if it's supported by mainline (it wasn't when I tried it 1,5 years ago)
<PaulFertser>
No, SEGGER J-Link is a JTAG/SWD adapter, just a regular USB device.
<ellyq_>
ack
<fredsco>
Thanks, I haven't experienced issues with openOCD yet and from browsing the web, openOCD should be natively supported by M1.
<PaulFertser>
fredsco: OpenOCD should work the same on any system, yes. If it does what you need on macOS then most probably it'll do no worse on a GNU/Linux system.

I just installed Fedora asahi remix with GNOME, with KDE you can set the keyboard to apple layout, unfortunately gnome does not have this. Does anyone know how I can swap control with command?

also running packman -Syu results in: "error: failed retrieving file 'community.db' from mirror.rackspace.com : The requested URL returned error: 404
<fredsco>
"
<Nefsen402>
Your mirror maybe out of date. You can try switching to another mirror or just waiting and hoping the current one updates soon.
<Nefsen402>
Oh nevermind, that's just a recent upstream archlinux migration away from community.db
<Nefsen402>
They *should* have just had an empty community.db so that the error doesn't show up.
<Nefsen402>
You can fix it from deleting community.db from /etc/pacman.conf
<fredsco>
Thanks, should I do this for core.db extra.db as well?
<Nefsen402>
No
<Nefsen402>
If you do that you break updating your system
<Nefsen402>
just remove community.db
<fredsco>
right, well I get this warning for core and extra db as well.
<Nefsen402>
Your mirror is broken then
<fredsco>
Ah I see
<fredsco>
What mirror is recommended to be used?
<fredsco>
thanks for your help FYI!

Do I need to append /$repo/os/$arch for the new mirror ?
leitao has quit []
<fredsco>
also when I echo $repo or $arch it is empty, could that be the reason?
<Nefsen402>
Those variables are specific to the configuration files. They don't apply globally for your shell
<fredsco>
ah, thank you :)
<Nefsen402>
I'm flying blind here, looking at directory listings of archlinux arm mirrors, /archlinux/$repo/os/$arch might not work
<Nefsen402>
I don't run asahi as my hardware doesn't support it
<Nefsen402>
But I do run archlinux x86 for everything else
ourdumbfuture has quit [Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<Nefsen402>
You could try <select a local mirror from that list or mirror.archlinuxarm.org which should select a local mirror automatically>/$arch/$repo
<Nefsen402>
but that's just guess work
<fredsco>
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.archlinuxarm.org : The requested URL returned error: 404
<fredsco>
get this using http
<fredsco>
and https: error: failed retrieving file 'community.db' from mirror.archlinuxarm.org : SSL: no alternative certificate subject name matches target host name 'mirror.archlinuxarm.org'
<Nefsen402>
SSL seems to be broken on many of these mirrors (ugh...) and I don't understand what URL it's trying to reach to get the 404 because of inadiquite logging
<Nefsen402>
I guess it all makes sense why asahi decided to move to fedora
