Hi all, new noob here as the name implies. Have a question about the macvdmtool and not sure whether this is the right channel..
<PaulFertser>
Just ask your actual question and wait for someone to answer.
<completenoob>
ok, thanks

So i have two Apple devices connected with a type C cable on the debug ports: a macbook pro M1 Pro, and a mac mini M2 on which I want to play around with Asahi Linux. My question is do I have to reboot both devices and do the reduced security step, or just the target device (the M2 mac mini) ?

could anyone please test if their touchpad gets disabled while typing? because mine is not and it's frustrating
<j`ey>
completenoob: newer versions of macOS need you to downgrade the 'host' as well, if you want to use macvdmtool
<j`ey>
(oh actually you might need to do that to use m1n1 at all from macOS? not sure, havent done that myself)

<jannau>
don't you have to build your own kernelcache to use macvdmtool on macos 12.0 and later?
<completenoob>
Oh, ok, thanks. I thought that on the host I just have to run the tool in a terminal and that's all
<jannau>
hmm, not sure if it's macvdmtool or just the serial port which requires the custom kernel
<PaulFertser>
completenoob: the question is also about how exactl you want to play around, probably you do not really need real serial and can instead use m1n1 in tethered mode to have everything you need.
<j`ey>
I think it's the terminal completely
<j`ey>
err, serial port, not terminal
<completenoob>
yeah, I think i'll just stick to the tethered m1n1 scenario for now , since this is really my first time
<j`ey>
https://github.com/AsahiLinux/macvdmtool "To have access to the serial console device on macOS Monterey (12), you need to disable the AppleSerialShim extension." this reads to me as if you cant do a normal tethered thing from a macOS host?
<j`ey>
sven: you use a macOS host right?
<_jannau__>
zerdox: disable trackpad while typing works here (kde/j314), timeout is not that long
<zerdox>
_jannau__: mine on hyprland and sway doesn't work :( don't have an idea how to debug this. could you post libinput device-list so i can compare with mine?

<marcan>
j`ey: that's for serial only, normal m1n1 proxy stuff doesn't need anything and macvdmtool just for remote reboots also shouldn't
<marcan>
completenoob: you shouldn't need macvdmtool at all other than as a convenient remote reset when your target hangs; m1n1 proxy mode doesn't need anything in the host (other than standard usb serial drivers that all OSes have)
<marcan>
there's no need for the serial port unless you are doing low level bringup of new targets (but only like 2 of us ever need to do that)
<marcan>
that's only ever used when we first light up a chip and USB doesn't work yet, after that we always use USB since it's much faster
<j`ey>
ok, that serial driver thing is for the UART over the USB C pins
jn has joined #asahi
<j`ey>
but normally m1n1 can use USB CDC serial
