<pitust>
is there a way to make asahi power usage not suck?
<pitust>
a two hour battery life is not really acceptable
<i509vcb>
Are you using a kernel with brightness control and gpu?
<pitust>
brightness control, yes
<i509vcb>
My m2 air will run fine for about 8 or 9 hours when using it
<pitust>
gpu, maybe?
<pitust>
also linux reports the battery percentage as 77% even though macos says its 100%
<i509vcb>
Idle and screen shut maybe 16 hours
<opticron>
I'm not sure that estimate was accurate, especially if it was right after boot when things are still churning
<pitust>
so i'm not sure how much trust do i put into that number
<pitust>
opticron: it's still one hour after waiting a bit for it to stabilize
<pitust>
if the reported percentage is accurate (which is not necessarily the case), the estimate of one hour matches the percentage

<opticron>
which laptop?
<pitust>
m1 mbp
<pitust>
13"
<opticron>
I have the M1M 14" and it definitely lasts for more than a couple hours
<pitust>
hmm okay
<nicolas17>
see if anything is eating CPU
<nicolas17>
in powertop
<opticron>
though they're quite different machine configurations
<jannau>
pitust: that sounds like there is something wrong on your system
<pitust>
htop says all cores are basically idle
<pitust>
i'm also quite suspicious of the estimated "77%"
<pitust>
macos says 100
<pitust>
and says battery health is 83%
ciggi has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<nicolas17>
how old is it?
<jannau>
that's weird, those charge percentage and time to empty come directly from the smc
<pitust>
i mean
<pitust>
a year or two
<pitust>
but i had the battery (i think?) replaced in december by an aasp
<jannau>
battery health seems to be off, I think upower calculates that
<pitust>
oh no they only replaced the logic board then okay

<pitust>
but still macos says 83% health and i got it from an aasp today so it should be all functional
abbe__ is now known as abbe
<nicolas17>
afaik if the battery goes below 80% health in less than a year since purchase, that's considered a defect and you can get it replaced under warranty; not sure how other repairs affect that though
<jannau>
the replaced logic could be an hint. services devices with part replacements seems to behave sometimes differently and we do not know why or how macos handles them
<pitust>
hmm okay
<pitust>
thats weird
<pitust>
and annoying
<nicolas17>
does it actually last 1-2 hours or are you just trusting the estimate? :)
<jannau>
but I haven't seen reports of weird battery readings. but we are just querying the smc for values
<pitust>
why would the estimate be wrong :P
<jannau>
bugs in the smc firmware
<pitust>
macos says the correct thing
<jannau>
but yes, please test how the battery actually behaves
<pitust>
sure
<pitust>
will do

<jannau>
how bright is the display? is the laptop warm? I think it would be noticeable if it would indeed use 80% or 100% of a battery charge in 1 hour
<pitust>
brightness 140
<tpw_rules>
yeah it would have to be dissipating some 60 watts
<pitust>
the laptop isn't warm or anything, but i ran it for like 10 mins max
<pitust>
a dissipation of 60 watts sounds... unlikely
<tpw_rules>
i mean that's the math to discharge that battery in one hour
<pitust>
mhm
<pitust>
it also sounds unlikely in that macos reported 100% afterwards
<jannau>
pitust: after `echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/module/macsmc_power/parameters/log_power` there continuous log messages like "macsmc-power macsmc-power: In 0.000W Sys 10.392W 3V8 5.731W MPMU 0.854W SPMU 2.238W CLVR 1.673W CPU 4.015W Batt -10.437W 74% Tempty 221m" in the kernel log (dmesg -w)
<pitust>
okay got it
<pitust>
will test in a minute, probably

<jannau>
that's from my 14-inch m1 max, the m1 air should show lower values but if Tempty with a full battery is there also very low (60 - 120 minutes) then it might be interesting to look at the values

fwiw, I noticed that macos will fib about battery life / percentages whereas apps like coconutbattery give a more truthful report
<pitust>
hmm okay
elros has joined #asahi
<pitust>
unixpoet: thanks, that is very... *interesting*
<pitust>
coconutBttery reports health 79%
<pitust>
and charge 90.9 when macos reports 96
<pitust>
and linux was saying 77%
<unixpoet>
three different pieces of software, three different answers \o/
<unixpoet>
it looks like linux might be taking health into account for the charge percentage, the math more or less works out

pitust: i can get about 6ish hours of light use with brightness at the same as you out of my 14" m1 pro machine
<chadmed_>
we know there is something up with the idle power draw on t600x but it shouldnt be 2 hours of battery bad...
<chadmed_>
i also have the same issue with the battery health measurements out of the smc, it jumps all over the place. last week it was 82% this morning it was 89%
