Yeah, the most common use case and what everyone generally expects to work if you try to install an OS, lol

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone has successfully run Asahi linux inside of UTM (either QEMU or the Apple virtualization framework), and if there is any info to getting it going? I've downloaded asahi-base-20230606-1.zip, but I can't seem to get it to boot successfully. I assume I've got the kernel image/ramdisk/root FS wrong.
<j`ey>
codydh: why do you want to do that?
<j`ey>
you should just use a generic linux distro
<j`ey>
asahi kernel in a VM doesnt do anything different
<j`ey>
(well I guess maybe the TSO stuff could work in a macOS VM?)

<codydh>
I guess I could just use another ARM distro, I was just hoping to give Asahi a try without committing to fully installing it.
<j`ey>
codydh: installing fedora in a VM is a way to try it out
<j`ey>
the asahi specific bits are for the hardware, which you wont get in a VM
<codydh>
Got it, OK, thanks

hi there! 👋
<dererk>
I've seen there was a Asahi Fedora Remix mentioning, and my high dyslexia degree prevents me from fully processing this part of the blog: "Our overlay just adds integration scripts, bootloader components, extra userspace support packages (for things like audio), and our forked kernel and Mesa packages."
<j`ey>
dererk: it means that most of fedora is just the "standard" fedora
<dererk>
Does that mean that Asahi Fedora Remix has audio support through the safe sound daemon, or am I proyecting?
<j`ey>
it doesn't currently have that, no
<dererk>
Gotcha! thanks for the confirmation, I was so happy that I was unable to process it properly. thanks j`ey
<dererk>
uhm, but I assume that's for hardware that has some sort of support out of the box, not for the currently not available that supposedly requires a daemon to monitor the safety levels to avoid burning the speakers, right?
<j`ey>
yeah exactly

ACK, thanks my friend

hi, just found out about fedora asahi remix - i assume it hasn't been officially released yet. is it usable/stable enough (in comparison with its arch linux counterpart) on an m1 mb air 2020?
<schkwve>
^ "usable/stable enough" is meant as general development work and playing music through the jack
<j`ey>
schkwve: I think so yes, seems like quite a lot of people already using it
ydalton has joined #asahi
<ydalton>
hold on, i thought the speaker safety daemon was called speakersafetyd?
<j`ey>
ydalton: if youre talking about earlier, that wasnt the daemon that I linked
WindowPain has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<ydalton>
yes, that seems to be something else
WindowPain has joined #asahi
<ydalton>
but as of yet, speakersafetyd hasn't been implemented yet, the last commit was a month ago
<ydalton>
i just hope virtualization works properly on fedora asahi, last time i checked the arch virtualization packages were completely broken
<ydalton>
but i heard qemu doesn't know how to handle the big little architecture which is present in the apple silicon chips, is that still a thing?
