yeah. i am using it for web development environment, thanks to asahi team and community. best machine so far :) also never going back to laptops with active cooling, fans suck
<jb1277976>
PaulFertser: nothing. i really like linux though :P im running arch right now on an older laptop and put my m1 to the side for now until linux is ready for it.
<jb1277976>
until linux is ready for the m1*

jb1277976: I use my m1 air for school and it works well for me. no external displays is a pain point, but for my use case it is mostly "ready". everyone's requirements are different though.

jb1277976: "until linux is ready" depends on each person's needs, maybe it's ready for you already, are you missing a particular feature?
<jb1277976>
nicolas17: let me read up on the site and see if i can use it
<chadmed>
many people here have been dailying linux on these machines for a very long time
<chadmed>
i and a few others for nigh on two years now
<jb1277976>
nice
<jb1277976>
chadmed: what distro?
<chadmed>
gentoo here, but asahi (either the alarm or fedora flavours) work fine too

i guess i'll add my two cents here... almost everything i need works; the only thing i'm really missing is virtualization (which i might need for school) and wine programs such as openmpt. otherwise my experience is great! i think proper virtualization i can get with fedora asahi but i'm waiting for the official release before i fully migrate over.
<ydalton>
with slp's krunvm work i think i'll be able to use wine programs, but i'm not sure about that
<stintel>
no idea about wine, but "normal" virtualization works fine, I run home assistant OS in a qemu VM
<ydalton>
really? in arch linux arm?
<stintel>
and no external monitor support ... that's why I opted for the 15" air. it's surprisingly usable :)
<j`ey>
ydalton: do you mean virtualisation, or emulation (x86)?
<stintel>
running Gentoo but using the asahi kernel config
<ydalton>
i'm talking about virtualization, i think i can get away with the arm64 version of openmpt
<ydalton>
from what i heard (and saw myself) the alarm qemu packages are broken
<j`ey>
they should work
<j`ey>
older versions might not have
<j`ey>
but theyre on 8.x now
<ydalton>
i'll give it a go
<ydalton>
maybe things have changed
<ydalton>
when did 8.x come out?
as400 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<mps>
ydalton: 8.0 is released in april iirc, and 8.1 in august
hightower2 has joined #asahi
<ydalton>
hm that was way before i even got this macbook
<ydalton>
from what i could tell there were just missing packages in alarm for qemu
<mps>
idk if the alarm/fedora/debian have it in repos
<ydalton>
i haven't tested an actual virtual machine yet
<ydalton>
fedora workstation aarch64 isos are with a 4k kernel right?
<mps>
qemu worked on alpine first day I switched to linux on m1 (soon will be two years), on alpine linux
<ydalton>
stintel: regarding external monitor support jannau on fedi has demonstrated dp-alt-mode with the m2 mac mini
<ydalton>
it now has to integrated with the drm drivers for an accelerated experience
<ydalton>
and i hope this could mean external monitors on asahi, so i can finally go clamshell mode

well, i've hit a snag: i've gotten an error in virt-manager saying i need to enable uefi for acpi, but i can't find any of the edk packages, just the virt-firmware package
<ydalton>
usually on x86_64 arch linux i would install the edk2-ovmf package for this but it's not in the repo
<ydalton>
this is exactly why i would like to migrate to fedora
jeisom has joined #asahi
<mps>
qemu should install edk* files in /usr/share/qemu
<ydalton>
well, i see a bunch of rom files in that directory
<ydalton>
i usually do that with packages i don't find (like wine), didn't work out
<ydalton>
if i really need a virtual machine (like for school) then i will try to work something out
<ydalton>
otherwise i'm not really in a rush
<ydalton>
jeison: thanks for the link

hi all, does anyone try to run ventura on the m1n1 hypervisor? I got a dependency issue, however, im pretty sure these kexts exist. I tried to copy the kexts to my home and edit the dependecies/versions, but didn't work.

I got: kmutil create -z -n boot -a arm64e -B ~/dev.kc.macho -V development \

frustrating, i spent one hour to install a 12.6, and use softwareupdate balalabal 12.6.8. After reboot, it's 12.6.9, and Apple doesnt provide a KDK of 12.6.9:'(
<nicolas17>
ugh
<nicolas17>
yuey: Apple is very inconsistent releasing KDKs

one time someone resorted to sending a Technical Support Incident to Apple (you get two per year with a developer account, $50/each after that)
<yuey>
nicolas: now l learnt. I think the most safe way is download an installer by macadmin-scripts and install it without the Internet, isn't it?
<yuey>
nicolas: i think i need. my case is, im not able to generate the kernelcache for dependency issue. but idk how to solve it.
<yuey>
sorry, it's ydalton : (
<ydalton>
yuey: i just used the stock kernelcache that came with macOS
<ydalton>
do you need the KDK or the stock kernel cache will do?
<yuey>
ydalton: im running the latest ventura, 13.5.2. because im not a macos exper, i just follow the hypervisor wiki to make sure i dont miss anything
<sven>
stock is fine
<yuey>
ydalton: if i can use a stock kernelcache, that would be perfect. where can i find it

"Expert mode" question. If this is not appropriate here, please suggest where I may enquire: I noticed a comment on https://oftc.irclog.whitequark.org/asahi/2023-09-11 after I asked regarding the asahi installer. It wasn't quite clear, but looks like someone was suggesting that expert mode installation might work, and the reason for the current install being marked unsupported was due to missing external monitor support (for the installer?)?
<kallisti>
Is it generally safe for me to attempt the "Expert mode" installation, with common sense without losing the existing MacOS?
