<crumb> @marcan I'd like to ask a question if I may, suppose following scenario: Dual boot install Asahi + MacOS, MacOS with FileVault and Asahi with FDE, Asahi macho boot binary without intermediate GRUB and UBoot. Distro does boot but black screen after SDDM login password / MacOS no password ... Is it possible to still potentially extract SSD data, since if I am booting into Linux SEP should be satisfied and keys should be unwrapped, so some hardw
<j`ey> try get to a tty, not sddm
<j`ey> ctrl-alt-fn-F2 for example

<crumb> @j´ey see that is the problem, for some reason only an underscore appears
<j`ey> not even other numbers F3 F4 etc?
<crumb> yup!
<crumb> i've tried eventually mashing all keys and nothing appears
<crumb> the only notable things were
<j`ey> I mean I guess you could replace the macho binary with a different one?
<crumb> pressing some combination + escape yielded instead of an underscore ^@ , pressing the power button makes the underscore disappear, but it can be brought back with some other combination (unsure)

<crumb> so, the main issue is no MacOS access
<crumb> i've handled 15 issues with macos access before, that is no issue,
<crumb> i just setup a small distro and then mount the drives and just edit stuff
<j`ey> oh right, if you cant get to recoveryOS you cant replace the macho
<crumb> i did actually lots of calls
<crumb> and it turns out i likely won't be able to recover anything without a password
<crumb> i would literally have to be a terrorist to be able to replace it
<crumb> or rather... to be able to make someone replace it
<crumb> *recover stuff

<crumb> So IDK AI concludes that the next step to fix laptop is to (JOKE DISCLAIMER) plant a few bombs? xD
<crumb> What I did find out is that apparently there is services which can map NVMe partitions accurately enough to allow me to format only say MacOS or something
<crumb> Wait a second... if they can format it like that wouldn't I be able to reinstall OS and then access data?
jeisom_ has joined #asahi
<crumb> yeah i got that wrong you can only format it
<crumb> ok so i'll be waiting for quantum computers it seems... won't ibm offer QAAS
<j`ey> you probably should, next time, keep your macOS password handy
Umeaboy has joined #asahi
<janneg> or don't boot without u-boot/grub. it would be very likely to recover with nomodeset / single user mode
<Umeaboy> Hi!
<Umeaboy> Just out of curiosity........is it normal for the makefile of asahi-scripts to install with an extra /?
<Umeaboy> install -dD $(DESTDIR)$(PREFIX)/share/asahi-scripts looks normal to me while install -dD $(DESTDIR)/$(SYS_PREFIX)/lib/firmware/vendor have a / after $(DESTDIR)
<Umeaboy> I mean, no other line regarding $(DESTDIR) has an extra backslash.
<crumb> potentially an error but extra slash does not change execution?
<Umeaboy> crumb: True, but I like finding potential code errors so that they may be either solved or closed.
<Umeaboy> That's why I opened the PR in the asahi-scripts repo.
<crumb> yes i'm encouraging that just saying what's likely happening
<Umeaboy> Feel free to close as invalid if I'm wrong.
<crumb> oh i'm just a bystander
<Umeaboy> Well, anyone here is free to close it regardless.
<Umeaboy> There are some PR's that needs to be addressed as it seems.

<kidplayer666> Also, NVRAM in macs is basically parallel to CMOS, but it doesn’t need the tiny battery to maintain the settings, right?
SalimTer- has joined #asahi

<jnn> kidplayer666: what do you mean by "parallel"?
<jnn> anyway, the NVRAM is stored in SPI flash, so it indeed doesn't need a battery

<PaulFertser> kidplayer666: on modern x86 motherboards (laptop, desktop, server all alike) UEFI has what they call NVRAM variables and all configuration data is stored in those on SPI-attached NOR flash. The battery is only used to power RTC (clock) and few related runtime registers. All the ICs involved are made using CMOS technology (and that's the case for the overwhelming majority of digital circuits for
<PaulFertser> many many years).
