<janneg> Tramtrist: check with macOS, the battery health percent value doesn't come from directly from the SMC but is calculated by upower

<PaulFertser> janneg: but do the regular POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL and POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL_DESIGN attributes come directly from the SMC? If yes, and upower just takes a ratio of them how is it not enough info?
hdbngr has joined #asahi
* PaulFertser keeps being puzzled by people looking at all those obscure GUIs instead of just looking in sysfs right away
<cy8aer> janneg: I wonder why the battery health is different on macOS (For my m1pro - bought 2022: macOS 89%, upower (full / design * 100) 84%). Which is the right health?
<PaulFertser> cy8aer: were you limiting max charge to 85 % (or whatever the limit there is) during those years you're using it? And how many cycles reported?
<cy8aer> PaulFertser: Yes (standard 80%) and 460
<cy8aer> These parameters do also have an effect to the calculation? I see...
<PaulFertser> cy8aer: I wouldn't expect them to affect measurements of CHARGE_FULL... and the level of degradation seems to be too high for a device that was only receiving limited charge normally.
<cy8aer> PaulFertser: so then the 89% from the macos battery info looks like more plausible? I have a 2015 ThinkPad with limiting the whole time and with upower it has 82% now - which schould be right for this age.
<PaulFertser> cy8aer: I would probably try to do a full cycle (discharge to < 5 %, charge to 100 %) to let it a chance to do full calibration cycle.
<PaulFertser> cy8aer: and no idea where the macOS gets the value from...
<cy8aer> Yes, looks like some mismeasurement because the system has very good uptimes still.
<PaulFertser> cy8aer: but, again, no idea, I'd take a look at the kernel git log and would ask the dev who wrote the code.
<cy8aer> PaulFertser: Thanks.

<sven> i'd trust the macos number if in doubt
<sven> my iphone also occasionally charges to 100% to "accurately calculate battery health" or something like that, so if that hasn't happened in a while the macos number might also be inaccurate
<sven> my air which I always charged to 100% is at 85% after a bit more than 3 years now fwiw

<LarstiQ> sven: do you unplug it when it reaches 100% or leave it on the charger till you go on the move or the like?
<sven> almost always on the charger
<sven> i'll just replace the battery once it dies
marvin24 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<LarstiQ> ok, so I'm not horribly wrong doing the same then :)
<sven> the battery will degrade faster this way but I don't care too much on the macbook because it's not too bad to replace the battery there
<sven> i care more with my iphone because I really don't want to replace that battery myself :D
<sven> there's a macos tool (AlDente I think) that can limit the charge to 85% or so and you can do the same on linux
<PaulFertser> I wonder how come macOS can report anything different from POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL / POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL_DESIGN
<sven> knowing apple they might read some obscure SMC keys from a kext and use that as inputs to some battery model hidden inside a kext somewhere :/
<PaulFertser> And POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL comes from another less obscure SMC key?
<sven> no idea tbh

<bluetail> chadmed hah. The other day I had to reinstall my mac mini m1 via DFU. Was lots of pain cause I needed the correct git versions of idevicerestore dependencies I found somewhere in a comment

<PaulFertser> bluetail: was it just the latest from official upstream repo or it needed to be something special? Do you fancy adding some information to the Asahi wiki? It's surprisingly lacking idevicerestore references as far as I can tell.
<bluetail> PaulFertser no it was all versions
<bluetail> I tell you, neither installing idevicerestore from git nor from 'normal' via pacman under archlinux did do
<PaulFertser> bluetail: I understand you needed different dependencies, not idevicerestore itself. I'm asking whether it was something specific or just latest upstream branch.
<bluetail> I needed this, AND run as root: usbmuxd -f -U root then run the other thing as root, too
<bluetail> yea, the specifics were to install the git versions of all dependencies
<bluetail> not the ones that are installed by installing idevicerestore from the 'usual' sources
zumi_ is now known as zumi
<bluetail> it wasnt even enough to just install idevicerestore from git
<PaulFertser> bluetail: was it real Arch Linux or ALARM that's packaging old deps? If the former probably the maintainers will bump the versions if you file a ticket.
<bluetail> real arch linux
<bluetail> and on top...
<bluetail> a real mac with configurator 2 did fail the dfu restore, too
<bluetail> only thing worked was idevicerestore with proper dependencies
<bluetail> Along the way I found a comment from marcan in 2023 asking for a 'release'
<bluetail> theres version 1.1 for something, but I actually ended up requiring to use 1.0X
<bluetail> its a pain in the buttcrack to restore a mac mini with deleted ESP
<PaulFertser> It's not like Arch Linux maintainers are against packaging from git if there wasn't a release for long enough, you probably just need to give them a hint.
<bluetail> no you are wrong
<bluetail> theres a git version
<bluetail> and it wasn't working the way it should
<bluetail> I basically had to use the 'old' idevicerestore with the 'new' git versions for deps
<bluetail> it was weird
<bluetail> And I have my doubts if a maintainer should do that
<bluetail> maybe I could publish my own Frankenstein idevicerestore that worked just for me Tm
<bluetail> imo we would need some FAQ
<sven> you can just create a wiki page if you think a FAQ would be helpful
<sven> maybe the idevicerestore project had a wiki or something like that as well?
<sven> otherwise it's also fine in our wiki imho
