hi.
<patricus>
asahi can be used as an accessibility tool, while macOS sonoma 14.4 is broken for blind users.
<kidplayer666>
how so?
<patricus>
they utterly destroyed voiceover.

<kidplayer666>
oh. I heard it used to be quite good
<kidplayer666>
but i was not aware that accessibility on linux was usable
<patricus>
not just usable, it's good, if you switch to xorg.
<patricus>
better than macOS at least.
<kidplayer666>
oh ok. I see why wayland would have some issues
<kidplayer666>
given that it doesn't give applications essentially universal control over the screen input devices
<patricus>
I mean, it works, sort off, unless you need to set caps lock as your orca key, then, good luck.
<kidplayer666>
quite interesting. I think that the people actually working on this, wouldn't mind hearing how their work is helping users that need these accessibility features, and nowadays they are more reachable on matrix
<patricus>
ah, what a irony! accessibility people are on the most inaccessible foss platform!
<patricus>
sadly the biggest issues on asahi is calamares, which is hackable to work... sort of...
<kidplayer666>
well, the teamlead, marcan, I am pretty sure he does not like matrix
<kidplayer666>
considers it quite unstable and generally a mess to deal with
<patricus>
it would be good if there would be any accessible client, I doupt pidgin can connect to matrix, so.

What about matrix-commander?

<patricus>
PaulFertser: hmm? I don't know that one.
<patricus>
the commander thing
<patricus>
I would want to get and see if it's any good.
<PaulFertser>
patricus: https://github.com/8go/matrix-commander it says it can be used "if you love the terminal and are too lazy to start up an Element desktop app or an Element webpage, matrix-commander is a a trivial way to fire off some instant messages to your friends from the terminal."

Just a question: I wonder if VRR as described in https://www.phoronix.com/news/GNOME-46-RC would work out-of-the box or is there something to be done in kernel/mesa?
<patricus>
I prefer GUI apps for messaging.
<PaulFertser>
What makes a GUI app accessible?

<leio>
I was told the DCP firmware does support VRR, but I don't know if it needs extra wiring up in asahi side or not; that said, I don't see any VRR controls on macOS for my ancient VRR monitor
<j`ey>
it does need extra work
<leio>
it oddly does make 60Hz a proper choice in refresh rate picker instead of just 30Hz when I enable VRR support from monitors side though
<leio>
but no visible VRR expose in macOS Display settings
<leio>
but Apple might just make it all transparently as well or something, no idea
<cy8aer>
j`ey: Thanks for the info. I had expected something like this.

Pretty sure I saw VRR options in macos when connecting my monitors. Unfortunately, if I left VRR on, macos would kernel panic within a few hours of usage
<Nefsen402>
I definitely saw buttons to toggle it stopped the kernel panics unchecking it. However, I never saw VRR used anyway with my OSD from the monitor
