kidplayer666: ah, in that case yes. and as to the historical meaning of CMOS (as PaulFertser alluded to): it's a way to make transistors in ICs (the primary way today), but back when CMOS was new, it was much more power-efficient, so it is what was chosed for battery-backed SRAM back then, and the name stuck
<kidplayer666>
jnn: thanks, when i searched for CMOS on wikipedia, the manufacturing process was what showed up, that makes sense

am I mad? usb booting a distro does work, but it's fiddly. I think I stopped trying in the summer because my really cheap amazon usb sticks died.
<danslinky>
nevermind, I found the page.
<danslinky>
are you interested in a mkdocs site for the wiki, instead of github?
<danslinky>
I have some spare time, and I'm kind of ok with it rtfm.danslinky.co.uk
<danslinky>
it has better search :)

Re non-removable storage on macbooks. Apparently any repair shop can just replace the NAND chips themselves, without any special equipment: https://youtu.be/kDNtSqa_i2A , then DFU takes care of everything.

<PaulFertser>
I wonder how complicated replacing blown speakers can be when replacing NAND is that relatively straightforward.
<PaulFertser>
janneg: hm, it's tricky, it says "Replace the top case (in models without separately replaceable speakers)." without mentioning what models it means and what exactly is preventing speakers replacement. Can it really be that harder than changing NAND ICs?
<janneg>
you have to re-adjust your scale, I wouldn't call BGA soldering "relatively straightforward". The additional complexity is that apple doesn't use standard nand and you can't order it from a distributor
<j`ey>
PaulFertser: well markan said he had the whole top case replaced, so I assume the M models are included in that
<PaulFertser>
It's straightforward for a repair shop, and I see they're using just rudimentary tools, basically that every hobbist has.
<PaulFertser>
j`ey: but why exactly, what's the real reason? Is that inability to buy speakers separately or what?
<j`ey>
no idea
<PaulFertser>
janneg: I wonder how independent repair shops manage to order those parts, probably there're well known ways. Is it really not some standard commercial NAND there?
<j`ey>
yeah because the controller is on the SoC, right?
<PaulFertser>
Most SoCs have NAND controllers, that doesn't make them require only very special NAND.
sig has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<PaulFertser>
Can't you look up the part number in schematics?
<janneg>
m2 air speakers are modules so in principle replaceable separately
<sven>
why are they reballing the nand modules then?
<sven>
and that doesn’t look like „straight forward“ bga soldering to me
<j`ey>
good point..
<sven>
this looks like they got the chips from broken donor modules I guess
<PaulFertser>
sven: they do not use infrared station, they do not use additional heater under the board, they do not use any special fixtures for stencils, do not use any super expensive BGA paste or any other tricks. I think it's as straightforward as BGA rework can possibly go, so well within reach of any repair technician.
<sven>
agree to disagree I guess
<j`ey>
sven: unless I missed it, he didnt really specify
<j`ey>
he said kixoia or however that is spelt
<PaulFertser>
Good point about the "new" ICs coming without balls so might be not from factory indeed.
<sven>
the blog post mentions „These NAND chips (between 2-8 depending on the board and capacity) work together on the main logic board to create an SSD array, but their configuration is encoded into each chip such that position of the chips cannot be changed.“
<PaulFertser>
Very informative, thanks for sharing!

<tpw_rules>
sven: janneg's post seems to suggest the configuration is encoded by the mac. if you get factory fresh chips, you can put them in whereever, but once used, they can't be moved
<tpw_rules>
people were saying there are external ways to revert them though
