<bluetail>
I bet thats only what is public, and that there are other, unspeakable truths :D
<nicolas17>
"USB-C to Lightning Adapter" has updateable firmware
<tpw_rules>
is that the one that runs linux
<nicolas17>
I don't think any runs linux, in fact this one is probably pretty tiny firmware
<tpw_rules>
actually iirc it was a video one
<nicolas17>
tpw_rules: maybe you're thinking of the Lightning to HDMI adapter, which runs XNU
<tpw_rules>
ah
<nicolas17>
there's some fun stuff I found that I wish I could write about but it would tip off Apple and they would hide it better :P

hi, i'm trying to completely erase my macbook in order to sell it but i'm not sure i erased the disk correctly. the storage device is 1tb but the only container visible in disk utility is 500gb, the size i assigned to macos before installing asahi. how do i properly erase the disk and reinstall macos, leaving no traces of asahi? i'm in recovery mode right now but if i need to install and boot into macos, i can
<PaulFertser>
nano: probably DFU with idevicerestore for making it super vanilla clean?
<PaulFertser>
(or with another macOS device and proprietary tool)
<nano>
idevicerestore? to be clear i don't have another mac
<PaulFertser>
idevicerestore should work on any GNU/Linux system so another mac isn't needed.
<nano>
how do i use it?
<nano>
my main pc runs linux so that's an option
<PaulFertser>
You might need to build the app and its lib from latest git sources yourself, do not count on distro-packaged version.
<nano>
how would i connect my pc and the macbook together? a usb-c cable or something else?
<PaulFertser>
And then just idevicerestore --erase --latest
<PaulFertser>
A USB-C cable, yes.
<nano>
got it. i'll look into it. thanks for putting me on the right track
<nano>
so i need to be in dfu mode, right?
<PaulFertser>
usbmuxd might also be needed to be latest, not sure.
<PaulFertser>
Yep
<nano>
got it, thanks a lot
<PaulFertser>
nano: I think you can repartition the main storage from recovery too but since you want absolutely no traces of Asahi I'm not sure if that's going to guarantee it.
<nano>
yeah i want it like it was from the factory
<PaulFertser>
nano: so https://support.apple.com/en-us/108900 but with idevicerestore should work. I think the battery cycle counter won't be reset either way.
<nano>
yeah i don't want the cycle count to be affected since it's been used for a year and i don't want to lie about the battery health
<PaulFertser>
nano: let me ask for what fraction of the retail price are you selling it?
<nano>
i honestly forgot the retail price. i myself bought it used
<nano>
i'm undercutting every other seller, though
<nano>
yeah the container is still 500gb after that
<nano>
i'll compile idevicerestore and try that instead
<PaulFertser>
nano: huh, the instructions say they result in deleting all the containers.
<nano>
disk utility gui lists nothing but the device, container, and a single volume
<nano>
the disk is "1tb", and the container and volume are both "502.5 gb"
<PaulFertser>
nano: probabl you can just do "diskutil apfs resizeContainer" ?
<nano>
diskutil on the command line lists the disk as 1tb, an apf_isc container of 524.3mb, an apf container of 502.5gb, an efi from fedora of 524.3mb, and freespace of 491.6gb
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nano>
which, is really screwed up
<nano>
i suppose if i remove that efi partition i can resize the container into the freespace, but that efi is in the way and disk utility gui doesnt show efi partitions
<chadmed>
you can use the cli
<chadmed>
disktuil eraseVolume free free [identifier of efi partition]
<PaulFertser>
Just as the wiki mentions, the GUI is limited there.
<nano>
oh hey that totally worked, the efi partition is gone. i'll do the "erase disk" thing from recovery assistant now and see if that reclaims all the space
<nano>
yes!! my container is now 994.66gb!
<nano>
thanks a lot for your help, folks
<nano>
now i can install macos and huck this thing on ebay
