which macOS version was not safe to upgrade to? I'm temporarily using macOS again because I need external monitor and like to upgrade but avoid killing my Gentoo install

It should be safe to update to the latest macos if you have a recent uboot version (recent as in from 2 weeks ago)
<Nefsen402>
You can update it from macos using the installer

my ECC server is done. In any case, this is far more responsive - even if its just listing contents of a directory. HBA, 20x20TB disks. Great! Just need to optimize noise/temparature a bit, close to 50 celsius. But practically, those are enterprise disks, they are rated with max of 75c
<tramtrist>
What ever happeend to the FEX activity? Is there anyone using it/publishing a tutorial or anything on it?
<tramtrist>
totally lost track
<j`ey>
check reddit
<j`ey>
someone on there posts some (kinda haphazard) guides
<tramtrist>
oh ok. Thanks j`ey
<tramtrist>
I thought it was 'being upstreamed' or something
<j`ey>
the mesa parts arent upstream yet
<jannau>
attention: asahi-6.8.9-6 can probably still corrupt data on dm-crypt backed storage. the single reverted commit was not sufficient
<bluetail>
jannau do we have asahi lts? :D
<bluetail>
maybe one ver is old enough so that its not affected from this
<jannau>
no
<j`ey>
6.8 itself had the issue
<jannau>
6.6 based kernels are not affected
<j`ey>
jannau: did you ever repro running dav1d only?
<jannau>
j`ey: no, just dav1d alone on an otherwhise idle system is stable so user space <-> user space seems fp state handling seems fine
<jannau>
I think I crashed sddm + llvmpipe though with running fio on dm-crypt

can someone try to reproduce a bug I am hitting? when I add a memory usage widget to the KDE taskbar and click on it, plasmashell crashes.
<dylanchapell>
steps to reproduce: 1. create a new user account (so yours doesn't get in a crash loop) 2. log in, right click on task bar. Click add widget. 3. Add the Memory Usage widget 4. Click on the widget in the taskbar. What happens to me here is plasmashell crashes. If that also happens to you, click the power button once, click clog out, then go back to your user account and delete the test one.

<bluetail>
dylanchapell what would that accomplish
<bluetail>
You need to reproduce that on KDE Neon and report it there. This is unlikely an Asahi issue. I consider KDE as easy to crash...
<dylanchapell>
I would like to see if that casues plasmashell to crash or not on someone else's system or if it is my problem
<dylanchapell>
I tried it on x86_64 fedora 40 and it did not crash
<bluetail>
yea then report it at KDE's end
<bluetail>
you need a log with symbols, preferrably gdb !
<bluetail>
get crash dump
<bluetail>
but proper one
<bluetail>
Without that its just so dang worthless
<bluetail>
FYI you can crash KDE by using the rules system. Or simply by having Addons installed
<bluetail>
First thing KDE suggests is to remove all addons / changes that aren't "original"
<bluetail>
Have you used gdb before?
<bluetail>
Additionally, what changes did you do since install? Is it possible for you to create a NEW user and check if it happens there?
<bluetail>
Also sorry if I am not helpful enough. I wished people didn't have to mess with all these shenanigans. Those Desktop Environments aren't simple anymore. It just got lots of failure points...

<dylanchapell>
it did not crash while running in plasmawindowed. I will try to attach gdb to plasmashell and get a dump.
