<testirus> hello
<testirus> is anyone alive
<j`ey> yes
<testirus> hello jey
<testirus> do you know if i can run QEMU inside of Asahi Linux? I just want to run Debian, Gentoo.
<j`ey> yes
<testirus> does it just run as expected
<testirus> or do i need to do anything special
<j`ey> works as expected
<testirus> ooh cool
<PaulFertser> Do you really need full OS though, why not run what you want in a chroot?
<PaulFertser> Or container
<testirus> what containers do you recommend
<PaulFertser> Why do you need to run those GNU/Linux distros in the first place, what's the end goal?
<testirus> experimenting
<testirus> i want to learn gentoo for example
<PaulFertser> For full experience probably indeed you want to run them in KVM, right.
<testirus> yes
<testirus> and this is possible in asahi remix fedora
<testirus> ?
<PaulFertser> Yes, just run virt-manager as usual or whatever you prefer.
<testirus> great
<testirus> how does the qemu performance compare to actually running the kvm in macosx with UTM for example
<PaulFertser> What kind of performance? For hardware you're supposed to use virtio-based drivers anyway, so you get near-native.
<testirus> i see, and where do the drivers apply, gpu, network, storage, anything else?
<PaulFertser> KVM doesn't exist in macOS by definition. KVM is a hypervisor that's part of Linux, the kernel.
<j`ey> UTM uses mac's hypervisor
<testirus> also GNOME or KDE :>
<PaulFertser> Network and storage, yes. For GPU you might need that recent DRM native context forwarding, guess it's not upstream Mesa yet.
<testirus> where do i get that drm native context forwarding driver

<testirus> fuck
<testirus> i bricked my macbook
<testirus> support.applem.com/restore
<testirus> FUCK
<j`ey> uh, what did you do?
<testirus> the only way to fix is to have another mac computer
<testirus> which i odnt got
<testirus> and im not gonna go to macstore again so ill just setup a macos vm
<testirus> and see if i can get it to passthrough that way
<j`ey> you can run idevicestore from linunx too, but if you can get to macOS, that's not 'bricked'
<testirus> trust me it is
<j`ey> but you can boot into macOS?
<j`ey> also what did you just do?
<testirus> i deleted all partitions
<testirus> nearly
<testirus> andj ust left 2 in disk utility
<j`ey> oh
<testirus> rebooted and this happened
<testirus> oh indeed
<j`ey> if you meant a macOS vm on another computer.. you dont need to do that
<j`ey> as I said, idevicerestore can work from linux
<testirus> i dont got linux installed on it
<testirus> the mac
<testirus> its just macos at the moment
<j`ey> can you still boot to maOS?
<testirus> no
pb17 has joined #asahi
<j`ey> testirus: so where are you going to make this macosvm to do passthrough?

<testirus> what % of your drive did you give for fedora asahi
<jannau> testirus: which partitions did you not delete? if first and last partition still exists the device should still boot into the system recovery partition (that's on the last partition). press power, release it and then hold power until the recovery appears
<j`ey> I think it was 100G macOS, 400G linux
<testirus> is it fedora you are running?
<testirus> i wonder how emulation on fedora asahi linux will perform, PCSX2, citra, etc.
<j`ey> yeah Im using fedora

<flokli> hmmh, is microphone via headphone jack on m2 air expected to work? I get a "cs42l84 3-004b: Detected bare headphone (no mic)" in dmesg, but it definitely has a microphone if I plug it into another computer.
<flokli> feature status mentions "microphones: wip", but 3.5mm jack "linux-asahi". So if it's expected to not work yet, maybe this deserves a footnote.

<leio> flokli: microphone via headphone jack is not supported yet. 3.5mm jack presumably refers to the audio output side of it.
<flokli> leio: this is the same for M1?
<jannau> no, headset microphones are supported. the unsupported microphones refer to integrated microphones in laptops
<flokli> jannau: huh, then how come it reports a headset without microphone being connected?
<jannau> does the headset work in macos?
<flokli> an excellent question. it does work on a thinkpad, but I can reboot this machine to macos in a bit and check

<testirus> hi guys, i got my device in DFU mode but i do get an error underneath it when running idevicerestore
<testirus> it says
<testirus> "Found device in DFU mode. ERROR: Unable to discover device type"
<testirus> This has led me to believe that M1 MacBook Air is not supported, and it is only for mac mini?
<PaulFertser> testirus: it is supported if you use the latest version from git of both idevicerestore and imux library.
<testirus> I've used the latest version from git.
<testirus> It just doesn't want to discover the device type, but it has found the device in DFU mode.
<PaulFertser> testirus: did you use usbmuxd from git too?
<testirus> I'm going to go ahead and install an official IPSW firmware I found on the internet for my device specifically and see if I can point it to that one specifically.
<testirus> I've got usbmuxd running too
<PaulFertser> Running from git or from distro?
<testirus> from debian
<testirus> repo
<PaulFertser> testirus: afaik that's known to be problematic
<testirus> ill give the usbmuxd from git a try
<testirus> whilst this firmware installs
<PaulFertser> flokli: for the reference, there're two different pinouts for 3.5 mm connectors with 4 contacts in how the microphone is connected.
<testirus> it does detect it, even the mode it is in on lsusb
<PaulFertser> testirus: you'd need to stop/kill usbmuxd from distro to be able to try the one you build from source.
<PaulFertser> lsusb doesn't do a thing
<PaulFertser> It just learns USB VID and PID from the kernel and looks those up in a database.
<PaulFertser> So even if there's no driver at all, nothing in kernel or userspace to handle this device you'd still get correct output in lsusb.
<testirus> here
<PaulFertser> imgur stopped showing pictures by direct links, unfortunately. The current known alternative is imgbb service.
<PaulFertser> Is that screenshot with usbmuxd from git?
<testirus> no
<testirus> ill get usbmuxd from git

<testirus> Do you want to ssh into my machine?
<testirus> im a bit of a noob
<PaulFertser> testirus: if you plan to use Gentoo you'll have to learn how to compile, and he's you just have a few of autoconf-based packages, what's the problem with doing it all one by one? It's a good learning opportunity and you wanted to learn.
<PaulFertser> testirus: I can ssh into your machine and compile imobiledevice stuff if you want
