<jannau> leio: that probably won't work. at least it doesn't with my way of injecting edids
zdzoz has joined #asahi
<jannau> but I had to remove CTA timing extensions since I can only inject 2 blocks / 256 bytes
<leio> so I'll try with BetterDisplay?
<leio> I'm not sure more than 256 bytes with HDMI will take either; reading back seemed to give some kind of a 384 one, but it was stuck on that
shiggitay has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jannau> it would be helpful to have the edid from a display for which dcp supports 4k 240Hz

<jannau> sounds like bad timing. I was surprised that you went ahead after our conversation
<leio> currently I'm leaning towards keeping it even when I am stuck on 120 Hz for a while or forever with this studio, but figuring it out would help a better informed final decision

<chadmed_> unfortunately i dont think emailing their support will really get you anywhere
<chadmed_> L1 support these days will just do the "your query is very important to us" then close the ticket
<chadmed_> relatedly im really not sure what apples deal is with continuing to keep hdmi around on their "professional" desktop machines
<chadmed_> makes sense on the laptops since your typical mbp buyer is going to want to plug it into the tv to show holiday photos to the family but on a $3000+ "content creation" desktop machine? get outta here
<LarstiQ> chadmed_: maybe they know Asahi doesn't support DP altmode yet? ;)
<chadmed_> im suggesting that they replace the hdmi port with a real full sized dp
<jannau> you obviously are supposed to buy an apple thunderbolt display. I don't see them removing the hdmi port on mac minis. If you have it already there and on the laptops just use the same solution on the low volume desktop parts and do not make more work for yourself
<jannau> also for TV production it might be useful to be able to drive a TV directly
<chaos_princess> you are supposed to use a usb-c to dp cable, or direct usb-c to usb-c (yes, there are monitors that take that)
<jannau> I'd say it's more likely that they remove the HDMI port than replacing it with full size DP
<dottedmag> For one, full-size DP is just too thick
<jannau> hmm, apple's CDN is slow today. 10h estimated download time for 14.5GB sequoia beta update with 350MB aleready downloaded
<jannau> yes, the connector of choice for DP is USB-C as far as apple is concerned
___nick___ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
pb17 has joined #asahi
<chadmed_> yeah i never expected it to be a realistic suggestion :p
<chadmed_> it would just be nice
<dottedmag> Indeed, fiddling with DP latch button becomes old very fast.
Juest is now known as Guest3051
<chadmed_> seems like a niche issue for a stationary desktop tbh

<dottedmag> Is there any connector with a button or a screw that does not eventually get replaced with a connector without buttons and screws? :-)
<chadmed_> belling-lee to F connector transition is going very well here actually
<chadmed_> XLR is going nowhere, speakon/powercon are going nowhere, 415 V 32 A three phase screw plugs are going nowhere
<leio> chadmed_: I'm surprised they were even able to talk to me about VTDB stuff. Not that the EDID's I'm seeing would confirm it
<leio> so maybe they have some L2/L3 consulting going on :P
<chadmed_> my radio is still all BNC connectors and theyre still used absolutely everywhere in the pro world
<chadmed_> leio: yeah sounds like you might actually be through to the product team or something
Guest3051 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<leio> I did have to back and forth a while, pointing out their reply ridicolousness(sic?), and poke over phone (unsure if that mattered)

<chadmed> yeah its usually like that. you used to be able to give some keywords to most service desks and get things escalated promptly if you knew exactly which team you needed to talk to but most companies now have directives for L1 to just close off tickets no matter what unless its absolutely incontrovertible that the ticket must be escalated
<chadmed> makes my life miserable and hellish on a daily basis but what can you do thats late capitalism for you

<LarstiQ> chadmed_: at least internall I have a `Escalate to Service Manager` button
<chadmed> yeah its usually external/vendor ones that are the issue
<chadmed> one particular vendor we work with very closely at work is absolutely pathetic for it, to the point where they will just reinterpret very, _very_ specific tickets with repro instructions to make it sound like its actually a feature request so they can close it and direct you to their suggestion box
<chadmed> e.g. i raise a ticket saying that some component is throwing a null pointer error and they will go "hm so what youre saying is you want to be able to configure the logging verbosity of that component. this is not a bug actually you need to raise a suggestion with the PM"
<LarstiQ> that would have me livid :/
d1ngus has joined #asahi

<chadmed> yeah now imagine having to be the middle man between this vendor and 70 customers while trying to run a team of 12 consultants and imagine doing that every day :p
<chadmed> my hairline has tanked so much damage over the last 18 months
<dottedmag> chadmed: I wonder if it would be possible to build up a business case for demanding changes: collate the tickets, calculate how much time is wasted, bump it up to management in the form "90% of the budget of our department is wasted dealing with these guys"?
<chadmed> they dont care theyre owned by a private equity fund and the particular series they bought the company in comes to maturity next year
<dottedmag> Or whatever KPIs are
<chadmed> so the current KPI/meta is "reduce costs to the absolute bare minimum no matter what so we can sell out for some multiple next year"
bdju has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed> unfortunately in the niche they/we operate there are virtually no viable alternatives for customers already committed to their products so they can just do whatever they want and our customers have to cop it
<dottedmag> chadmed: Sounds like a recipe to relax a bit and stop caring. Especially if you get some upside :-)
<chadmed> if i relax/stop caring any further id basically have to stop showing up :p
<dottedmag> Would that work? :-)
<chadmed> probably not, its an issue with the vendor and not my employer
<chadmed> we're just tied heavily to that vendor with no real offramp to start offering services for/with other vendors
<dottedmag> Ugh. I feel for you.

pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<leio> yup, soon, been busy :) I should be getting a diff monitor 240Hz EDID later today too
<PaulFertser> It's so weird that displays can give you different EDIDs depending on some OSD menu settings, one would expect the right thing to do is to just add an EEPROM, flash it at the factory and that's it, no tricks, no smarts, same way it was good for many years should be as good these days, you tell the host your specs, up to host to decide how to drive.

<jannau> can you get the EDID from your monitor connected via HDMI to the M2 Ultra? Since asahi-6.10.7-2 the linux driver supports querying the EDID if "apple_dcp.unstable_edid" is specified on the kernel command line
