I had two asahi installs -- one was used for rustconf, and contains no work material. The EFI partitions from both installs remain, but the data partitions are... missing.

I imagine macOS won't let you access the raw block device even as root, but it will work from recoveryOS

nicolas17: It is free space, so far as I can tell. The EFI partitions are still present, so it shouldn't have been able to grow the macOS partition into that space (it would overlap with the EFI partitions)

`diskutil list` lists 99.5GB and 491.6GB of free space, respectively

if you have free space on an external disk or on another computer, you could boot into recovery and take a full disk image

even if you can do what you want from inside macOS, it would be a good idea to make a backup first anyway :p

(btw if the "material from the former workplace" was on macOS, that's definitely gone, an MDM remote wipe irrecoverably rotates the encryption key for the macOS data partition)

chaos_princess: asus netbooks used to do something like that but it was just a hidden partition on the primary disk that the bios could directly boot into bypassing the MBR if you used a special power button

given how ridiculously huge modern uefis are it probably wouldnt be too much extra effort to put a tiny kernel and busybox into the ROM. but then again, most x86 board makers cant even manage to include a working uefi shell so....

yeah wined3d is the original dx->opengl thats been around forever

its been largely superseded by dxvk but since on macos we rely on moltenvk we cant use the latest versions of dxvk because those use vk 1.3 features

There is also the bit where either winforms or wpf was written to translate to carbon, not cocoa, so the only way to run it on modern macos is to custom build macos wine with gtk backend

the best idea would be to convince them to give me the source so I can port it to aarch64

ultimately not needing krun at all will be ideal even when chaos_princess manages to get x112virtgpu working reliably

the stack is just too jank and if box64 can fake 4k pages to the point where wine arm64ec can mostly work then that will be the play

the only hole in that is 32-bit linux code but there really shouldnt be much of that floating around outside of esoteric proprietary stuff (and steam)
