in my experience the cold boots are what gave me the biggest issues so I'll see if I can create "test cases" first before I start poking too hard.

macromorgan: not sure I follow: it should be triggered by its compatible name, you just need to enable the driver (CONFIG_SYS_I2C_SUN8I_RSB)

U-Boot proper works very much like Linux in this regard: it uses the DT to enable the drivers and their resources

at the moment the defconfigs do not enable much of that AXP infrastructure (RSB/I2C plus the AXP drivers), that should indeed be fixed
