<stintel> dwfreed: right, 22w rings a bell I think mine dropped to 19 by installing a new (more efficient?) PSU
<stintel> the m300 CPU can't do frequency scaling due to some erratum
<stintel> which is a bit unfortunate
<stintel> aparcar[m]: I noticed that my x86 builds were always rebuilding grub, and depending on your .config, even multiple times
<aparcar[m]> bobsy: hi
<stintel> optimising that grub build so it only builds once will probaby shave off some time
<aparcar[m]> stintel: even with the imagebuilders it takes a lot of time depending on the rootfs size. Iā€™d love to speed that up
<stintel> looool
<stintel> 5500 EUR for a 1M UTP ?
<stintel> what are these people smoking
<dwfreed> stintel: ah, yeah, if it's not able to do freq scaling, then probably 30w is gonna be peak with full fan speed
<dwfreed> my wattmeter peaked at like 28w for a brief period when I first turned in on, in that split second when the fans are at full speed

<stintel> dwfreed: I'm actually curious ... these guys https://www.powerpc-notebook.org/en/ are building a laptop with the soc that is used in the m300 so I'm wondering if they have some magical solution for the cpufreq erratum
fakuivan has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<dwfreed> huh, interesting
<stintel> I wrote them in March 2022 to ask if they were aware of that erratum, they then opened a discussion on nxp community: https://community.nxp.com/t5/PowerQUICC-Processors/A-008083-erratum-T2080-even-with-a-single-cpu/m-p/1433507#M4114
xes has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<f00b4r0> i was about to suggest they didn't know about the erratum ;P
<stintel> in the linked PDF there are 2 workarounds: 1 don't do DFS, 2 place cluster in PCL10 power mgmt state before doing DFS
<stintel> sounds like it's not entirely impossible
<f00b4r0> looking at option #2 sequencing, it looks like it's a ton of overhead though
<f00b4r0> and doesn't work for single devices
<f00b4r0> so, "don't do dfs" it is
<stintel> ah
<stintel> missed the note on the bottom :P
<stintel> Option #2 is not applicable to single cluster devices (T2080,...)
<f00b4r0> well the "cores [...] will reset and start again as cold boot" is quite the hint that you can't really do that on single devices ;)
* stintel grabs his M200
<f00b4r0> (also illustrates the massive overhead)
<stintel> this doesn't have the erratum
<f00b4r0> what I haven't checked is whether the kernel still tries to power manage the cpu via power states

<f00b4r0> that side of the pcb flips the finger to every design rules involving mains voltages
<f00b4r0> not to mention the abominable solder job
<f00b4r0> I also suspect that thing is an EMI disaster. Dear lord, please kill it with fire.
<stintel> it might do that to itself :D
<f00b4r0> indeed

<f00b4r0> i don't understand how these can pass any certification test.
<stintel> I shall remove the one I have then :P
<f00b4r0> let me guess, they don't.
<Znevna> is it advertised as a pest repeller too? :p
<f00b4r0> lol
<stintel> there *is* a CE label on the thing
<stintel> and mine pretty much looks the same as the photo in the link you sent
<f00b4r0> CE label means "China Export"
* f00b4r0 runs ;)
<f00b4r0> CE label is purely declaratory and doesn't mean anything in terms of certification, fwiw, even if it "looks" otherwise, which is why cheap crap often features it.
<f00b4r0> all it says is "the manufacturer swears on their reputation that the product satisfies to EU regulations". Which really means nothing. There's no independent testing involved, in particular.
<stintel> I see
<stintel> LOL China Export :P
<f00b4r0> actually to be fair: in 99.9% of the cases there's no independent testing involved, as all mfgr will use "Module A", a.k.a. internal production control
<f00b4r0> meanwhile got a train to catch, must get packing :)
