ChanServ changed the topic of #aarch64-laptops to: Linux support for AArch64 Laptops (Asus NovaGo TP370QL - HP Envy x2 - Lenovo Mixx 630 - Lenovo Yoga C630)
<Guest710> sooo apparently there's gonna be a Surface Pro 9 with 8cx Gen 3... if rumors are to be believed
<clover[m]> neat
Guest710 is now known as qzed
<HdkR> Very neat
<szclsya[m]> 6.0rc6 pushed to repo
<clover[m]> boots and battery working again
<clover[m]> any new stuff?
<szclsya[m]> nothing as far as I know
<szclsya[m]> oh ipv6 firewall is now enabled because I want to use tailscale :)

<clover[m]> steev: with new kernel i still have to flip usb c for display out
<steev> correct
<steev> 23:54:20 <steev> thinkpad specific is no, just the firmware placement update
<steev> i haven't had a chance to dig through the sm8450 stuff in bamse's git
<clover[m]> oh ok, just fyi
<steev> i ended up doing radxa-zero stuff
<steev> yeah, that'll be the case until we add in the thing that makes it so you don't have to :)
<steev> but in good news, i now have it so that the waveshare little hdmi displays with the weird resolutions (1080x1920, 400x1280, etc) now work properly on amlogic, i just need to send them towards the list
<clover[m]> nice
<clover[m]> oh wow gnome 43 released
<clover[m]> alarm still on 42.5 though

dcz has joined #aarch64-laptops
<dcz> are any recent laptops supported by coreboot or u-boot?
<clover[m]> pinebook pro
<dcz> ...with >=8GiB RAM :P?
<dcz> just looking for something not as hopelessly blobbed as x86
<clover[m]> https://system76.com/laptops/lemur those are corebooted and look decent. pricey though
<dcz> they still have Intel ME in them
<clover[m]> they use ME cleaner. probably your best option
<dcz> I guess I'll wait for ARM to catch up then...
<clover[m]> qualcomm laptops have dash, apple has a bunch of arm processors on the M1 soc they could easily use as control processors and we would be none the wiser. i dont really think ARM is a safe haven from this kinda stuff
<dcz> there is no safe haven, but at least it's not mandatory outside of x86 :)
<szclsya[m]> qualcomm probably have even more magic compared to intel, although they might be not as bad as me since me can do networking
<dcz> I'm more hoping for Rockchip. Thankfully, there's enough ARM manufacturers to choose from, even if it's i.MX8
<clover[m]> pine64 will probably release an RK3588 laptop once people stop buying pinebook pros, and that should have at least 8GB RAM
* dcz is getting cautiously excited
<szclsya[m]> yeah rockchip is pretty neat on open source side. sadly they are kinda slow on high performance socs
<szclsya[m]> I believe they are mainly selling their chips to iot market, so laptops might not be their priority
<dcz> I've been using an Ivy Bridge for the past 10 years. Only RAM would be a downgrade
<szclsya[m]> x220?
<dcz> x230
<szclsya[m]> nice
<szclsya[m]> ah yes x220 uses sandy bridge
<clover[m]> RK3588 you can buy as SBC to try now: https://www.khadas.com/product-page/edge2
<dcz> I like how precisely you clocked my laptop :D
<szclsya[m]> I still have a coreboot-ed x220. sadly its battery is just not good enough for school works now
<dcz> I tried to coreboot mine today, and that train of thought brought me here
<szclsya[m]> yeah sadly there's nothing like the old thinkpads now in terms of freedom and thicc-ness nowdays
<clover[m]> i told the system76 guys they should make an RK3588 laptop with the lemur pro chassis
<clover[m]> looks so flat you can almost shove it in a laptop already
* szclsya[m] > <@clover:ironrobin.net> i told the system76 guys they should make an RK3588 laptop with the lemur pro chassis
* szclsya[m] still gonna to buy thinkpads for the nub

<dcz> first thing I'm going to do to a non-thinkpad is rip out the flat touchpad and add a smaller one + 3 mouse buttons
<dcz> I feel like a hostage to Thinkpad mouse buttons and I'm not enjoying it :P
<szclsya[m]> I heard that the thinkpad keyboard is good enough
<szclsya[m]> (but still, one more stuff to carry
<steev> hm, that's interesting
<steev> bamse: had a weird/interesting interaction on my thinkpad just now... wireless seems like it might be affected by one of the usb ports? setup was, apple power adapter plugged in to the port closest to the display, and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D1J88CF was plugged into the other usb port. when booted with that setup... wireless would refuse to connect, unplug the sdcard reader, and it would connect, plug the sdcard reader
<steev> back in, and traffic would stop (couldn't ping), unplug it everything worked again. simply swapping the power to the furthest from display and the sdcard reader into the port closest to the display... works?
* bamse looks in the other direction
<bamse> wrtf?...
dcz has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<bamse> -r
<steev> right?
<steev> i know usb can affect wireless but that was something i hadn't seen before (or i had and hadn't really put it together until just now)
<steev> after i finish writing this sdcard i'll test again
<bamse> perhaps there's a disturbance in the force
<steev> yep, definitely does it
<steev> weird, doesn't happen with a usb key
<bamse> what if you wrap your sdcard reader in some tin foil?
<steev> i'm out of tin foil :( otherwise i would. but my cat is happy, i moved the cat treats trying to find the tin foil and she came running over so i had to give her some
