<hogliux> A random question for the yoga 7x folks: how loud is your laptop's coil whine? Mine is annoyingly loud. I can actually here the I-beam of the cursor blinking and scrolling and resizing a window sounds awful. I could swear it got worse after upgrading to 6.11. Has anything changed in regards to frequency scaling? It could also be because I now load the tplg file for sound and the amps might be on or something but it doesn't sound like it's coming
<hogliux> ... from the speakers.

<macc24> i never heard any coil whine from my unit
<macc24> just speaker pops when poking around ucm
hogliux has joined #aarch64-laptops
<hogliux> :-( seems like it's my unit then. Just booted into windows and it's also super loud there.

<robclark> you could try removing the tplg file to rule out audio/speakers. Maybe I'm more sensitive to it than others but I can hear the gpu on most devices
<macc24> does it do that in uefi settings?
hogliux has joined #aarch64-laptops
<robclark> I think it is related to ddr speed, probably nothing in uefi would trigger it
<macc24> ok if i put my ear literally against the vent holes at the bottom i can hear some faint coil whine
<hogliux> It's super load when loading the kernel in grub: then it's actually a whine. In linux and windows it sounds more like whispering
<hogliux> I'll try UEFI later. Can't really reboot right now
<robclark> interesting.. I think I've only noticed it with heavy gpu load.. tho maybe it is masked by the fans with heavy cpu load
<macc24> i don't remember hearing it when doing kernel compilation when the fans haven't kicked in yet
<kuruczgy[m]> I heard it when reading gpio registers in WinDbg, but never on Linux
<macc24> huh
<macc24> didn't know you could do that
<hogliux> Yeah I'm sure when I had my laptop new it was much much quieter. It's very loud when scrolling or playing animated gif. It actually goes away when the cpu is actually under load. That's why I assume it's the switching of power states or cpu freqs that I'm hearing. So a low fps gif will constantly switch between different power states between frames. But that's just my uninformed guess.
<hogliux> I can literally hear the I-cursor blink every second in the input field of IRC and I'm sitting about a meter away from my laptop.
<robclark> interestingly, I don't hear it on 7c chromebooks.. not sure if I can hear it on x13s (background noise level here is too loud).. but I've heard it on enough different things that it is somewhat unsurprising
<hogliux> I've heard it more and more on my old laptop (very old Dell XPS 13 7th gen Intel) as it gradually aged. I always assumed it's just what happens when transformers or other passive electrical components get old.
<hogliux> I was just surprised to hear it so soon on my yoga 7x
<robclark> hogliux: you could try increasing/decreasing /sys/devices/platform/soc@0/3d00000.gpu/power/autosuspend_delay_ms to see if that makes a difference.. also play with min/max freq in /sys/devices/platform/soc@0/3d00000.gpu/devfreq/3d00000.gpu (see available_frequencies)
<robclark> if none of those change anything then maybe cpufreq.. there should be some sysfs to tweak with that too
<bylaws> I'm experimenting with the scmi patchset on my t14s but about 20s into boot I always seem to get a response timeout and then the device reboots shortly after
<bylaws> Disabling the scmi DT node works around the issue
<bylaws> It looks like the same error that the cpucp IRQF_NO_SUSPEND patch is intended to fix
<robclark> sibis: ^^^

<macc24> kuruczgy: any idea if slim7x has xhci debug?
JosDehaes[m] has joined #aarch64-laptops
<JosDehaes[m]> krzk: I got something out of the speakers using UCM, but the channels are mapped wrong. How are we going to handle the 'TwitterLeft' stuff from the CRD? All the codec UCM files have this mistake (and all the other x1e machines will probably re-use it?)
<JosDehaes[m]> krzk: also the sound is very distorted even though all values are very low. (and no, speakers are not blown, everything is fine in windows)
<kuruczgy[m]> macc24: idk, I don't know what xhci debug is :/
<robclark> JosDehaes[m]: I think we should probably just fix the dts
<JosDehaes[m]> Agree
<JosDehaes[m]> and the UCM files
<JosDehaes[m]> should I send a patch somewhere?
<macc24> robclark: crd dts or slim7x dts?
<JosDehaes[m]> CRD
<robclark> whichever one(s) have the spelling error
<JosDehaes[m]> it has "TwiiterLeft" and "TwitterRIght" in the DTS (and UCM)
<JosDehaes[m]> but kernel and UCM need to upgrade in lockstep
<JosDehaes[m]> probably not that important for a 'reference' device
<macc24> idk i'd just send patches upstream and let the maintainers decide
<robclark> I guess given that audio is just starting to work we should just fix dts and ucm to spell things correctly and live with the short-term pain
<JosDehaes[m]> I can create a PR for the UCM stuff, who can do the kernel bits? I'm not familiar with kernel upstreaming
<macc24> i might do that tomorrow
<JosDehaes[m]> forking UCM config now 😁
