<alex43>
Hello all,
<alex43>
I have been working as a web application developer with Debian-based Linux distributions and KDE for years. Now I got a new device, that is a Dell XPS 13 9345 with Snapdragon. I was observing that the Ubuntu Concept guys are providing an ISO Image with latest Patches which Looks quite promising. While I am Aware that Things are really not Ready yet to be used for daily production work, I was wondering whether it could be
<alex43>
some dual boot Installation including partitioning the harddisk in order to avoid large changes later on. I plan to create a shared data partition so I could do some work using Windows temporarily but switch back to Kubuntu later on, reusing the existing Git clones and other files.
<alex43>
Do you have any experience with that Dell device and the latest support for it? Is the time ready for doing what I have in mind or should I wait a bit more? Would be interesting whether installing and starting KDE works out at all. Thanks for any pointers.

<JensGlathe[m]>
From what I've read on https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-24-10-concept-snapdragon-x-elite/48800 the Dell 9345 seems quite well supported, and in active testing. I don't have one (I have the HP Omnibook X14), and I also run the 24.10 ISO on it. Installation went smooth. It is set up as dual boot for Windows and Linux. Sound is not yet working, camera neither. Working on external display support.
<tobhe_>
Dell XPS should work pretty well with the Ubuntu image but as you said it is all very experimental for now
<tobhe_>
if that is ok for you dual boot should work and I haven't heard any complaints about problems so far

<freekurt[m]>
Do any of the X Elite laptops have 15 inch screens?
<JensGlathe[m]>
Asus Vivobook s15
<freekurt[m]>
thx
<zdykstra>
the surface laptop 7 also has a 15" model, I believe
<tobhe>
but I don't think we have that one working yet
<konradybcio>
i have one on my desk ;)
<konradybcio>
13 and 15 are identical from software pov, largely
<tobhe>
I probably have to cherry pick a few commits to get it working in the Ubuntu image then
<konradybcio>
you'll need to enable CONFIG_ACPI and a bunch of CONFIG_XXX_SURFACE
<tobhe>
ok, thx. I'll have a look at those. Do you have a link to a known working tree or should mainline just work?
<konradybcio>
mainline should provide good enough support to boot, i have a couple of downstream patches that i hope to flush out soon
<tobhe>
could you share your config? I do seem to have most of ACPI and SURFACE enabled, at least as modules
<robclark>
heh, CONFIG_ACPI seems like a weird dependency (but I guess that it would normally be enabled in a distro kernel anyways)

dgilmore: Thank you for your note. I had a look at the German site. There is 64 GB RAM at no extra charge. Unfortunately there is no higher processor with Turbo Boost selectable, it is still the weakest processor (X1E-78-100) on offer. What is also good is the choice of a 5G mobile broadband unit.
<agl>
Which X Elite Notebook is at this time with best supported for Linux?
<dgilmore>
agl: interesting on the Ram not costing extra, in the US it is $193 more
<steev>
i think either vivobook or thinkpad? for best supported? not sure
<dgilmore>
there is a choice between X1P-42-100 and X1E-78-100 for processor the later is $60 more
<JensGlathe[m]>
Almost all available notebooks have the x1e-78-700 binning.
<dgilmore>
X1P-42-100 is limited to 32GiB ram
<JensGlathe[m]>
x1p-42-100 is 8 core 3.2GHz Purwa SoC

<konradybcio>
robclark removing CONFIG_ACPI requirements from surface drivers would have taken days.. and possibly wouldn't leave the drivers in a very good state
<konradybcio>
realistically we only needed to probe the surface hub which then has its own custom bus
<JensGlathe[m]>
you won't see many higher binnings in the laptops for [reasons]

konradybcio: since i know nothing about these things and don't fully understand the patchset... is https://lore.kernel.org/linux-wireless/20241029083340.3010798-1-quic_bpothuno@quicinc.com/ really 6750 specific? for giggles, i locally added it to 6855 and didn't see any adverse reactions from suspending, but i don't have access to any specs (and apparently qualcomm thinks i'm a terrorist currently so i can't even acccess my qcom acct)
<ahoneybun[m]>

i *do* work on Kali Linux, but still, that would have to be an extremely loose interpretation about what we work on (and afaik, qcom would like to see kali work on their hardware)

the latter part more than the former :) but i'd love to see your writeup
<noisycoil[m]>
Sure
<steev>
locally i have (someones?) git repo modified to generate everything, just haven't had the cycles to test it
<noisycoil[m]>
(Meaning it does not contain the actual kernel code, but only the debian directory )
<steev>
right, i'm familiar :)
<noisycoil[m]>
Yeah, but I know you don't use that one in kali
<noisycoil[m]>
You have the full repo including kernel code
<steev>
we do, as our starting base
<noisycoil[m]>
Let me see if I ever published the kali-arm repo, or if I kept it private
<noisycoil[m]>
Fails to build because Debian testing dropped support for polkitd-pkla since policykit-1 124-3
<steev>
ah yeah we drop that package
<noisycoil[m]>
So i can remove it safely?
<steev>
yeah
<noisycoil[m]>
Ok
<steev>
if you're installing any pkla files though, they need to be converted to the new js rules files
<noisycoil[m]>
No, I'm not. Thanks for the heads-up

No luck. There's a version conflict between the Plasma/Qt stack (I had installed plasma in kali since it's the asahi flagship DE) and the latest version of the asahi mesa drivers. These install in Debian testing+unstable, so I guess Kali is not in sync with Debian for some packages ATM. Will try again in the future
