<chadmed> debian folks: what version of wireplumber is in stable right now?
<chadmed> urgh its still 0.4
<chadmed> jannau: did we not add the sd card slot fix to asahi-scripts proper?
<chadmed> i feel like we should do that...
<jannau> it's in fedora-asahi-remix-scripts, mostly I don't want to deal with where/how to install it for every distro. after installation `systemd-hwdb update` needs to run
<jannau> probably easier to fix it in systemd itself
<chadmed> yeah fair enough. i might just copy it for us into asahi-configs or something

<jannau> someone on reddit is reporting kernel compile time of 6h on m2 air/gentoo "due" thermal throttling. That sounds outlandish and I would kind of supect more something like 'MAKEOPTS=-j1'
<chaos_princess> that would track if it is a distro kernel with j1
<chaos_princess> get them to post emerge --info, that should include makeopts
<chadmed> lmfao thats outrageous
<chadmed> its like an hour here
<jannau> I'm a read-only reddit user
<chaos_princess> same :P
<chadmed> lol link the thread i suppose ill muck in
<chadmed> donezo
<leio> emerge --info isn't relevant if they use asahi-sources, as they launch make manually then
<chaos_princess> considering that they also have problems with ff, glibc, etc, i still think there is a misconfiguration in make.conf
<leio> the reply did mention dist-kernel though, so that's technically correct then to apply MAKEOPTS
<chadmed> theyre talking about the dist-kernel im pretty sure
<leio> ah, there's more comments
<leio> was a single comment link
<chadmed> even so, with -j1 theres just literally not a chance in hell its thermally throttling
<chadmed> so either the person is full of shit or theyre trying to build the dist-kernel while standing on the road in dubai or something
<leio> now I'm curious if my kernel compile time was 1 or 2 minutes :P
<chaos_princess> there is a crazy scenario where it could throttle with -j1, but it requires a stupid amount of misconfiguration (llvmpipe)
<chadmed> would the screen even repaint fast enough at -j1 for that to matter :p
<leio> if I still ran GNOME on llvmpipe, I had 12 cores out of 24 busy with screen updates :)
<chaos_princess> if you are doing something else - yes
<chadmed> leio: i think your actively cooled m2 ultra studio is a wee bit different :p
<leio> yes
<leio> means if they do that with llvmpipe, they'd use all of their cores for that.
<leio> anyways, guess we'll see from any reply what's up

<chadmed> oh this looks like a FUD account
<chadmed> yeah lmfao no comments anywhere except r/asahi and theyre all
<chadmed> not very nice to us :)

<kode54> umm what
<kode54> how the hell would a GPU have 2TB/s memory bandwidth
<kode54> their posts reek of bullshit
<kode54> outright lies about the supposed capabilities of conventional PC hardware

<chadmed> yeah GDDR has barely cracked 1TB/s
<chadmed> idk maybe the newer revisions of HBM can do it? but thats not on consumer graphics cards anymore
<jannau> Nvidia announced Hopper with 3TB/s memory bandwidth using multiple HBM3 stacks. Calling that PC hardware is a strretch though
<chaos_princess> there is a pcie version technically, and i am sure that there is at least one r/localllama person who bought one
<kode54> half their posts are deleted
<chadmed> they only have comments in r/asahi too and theyre all either "my macbook hit 100 billion degrees and killed my child" tier fud or just shit talking devs for not working fast enough or whatever
<chadmed> i doubt ill get a response to my request for emerge --info
<chadmed> i doubt they even use gentoo or even asahi at all
<jannau> sure, you can by PCIe 5 H100 cards for €30k
<chadmed> inb4 someone buys one and asks about egpu :p

<jannau> if someone buys a 30k GPU I would expect they by a mac pro from pocket change
<jannau> +u
<chaos_princess> btw whats with the pcie controller in the mac pro, did they fix device memory in that one?
<chadmed> macos still doesnt have shiny new userspace drivers for non apple gpus afaik so maybe not?
<chadmed> was the device-ngnre thing the controller or the dart/broader soc
<jannau> possible, nobody checked afaik
<chadmed> i would think if they intended to fix it they would have made a song and dance about it especially with big beefy MI250 and MI300 and whatever else releasing
<chadmed> and then everything else pcie in the mac ecosystem is either first party stuff like the afterburner cards which are totally redundant now, or babys toys like elgato capture cards that probably dont particularly care about write combining and such
<chadmed> The GPU is integrated into the M2 Ultra chip and doesn't support additional graphics processors, such as PCIe graphics cards or MPX modules. You can configure the number of GPU cores in your Mac Pro when you purchase it.
<chadmed> well there you have it
