<chadmed>
oh yeah you already said that ^
<chadmed>
runxiyu: there is no "power management" on this platform its all automatic
<chadmed>
theres no acpi at all either
<chadmed>
WYSIWYG at this point. it will improve Soon(tm)

<runxiyu>
so... I can't control cpu frequency scaling or anything at all? alright
harryheres has joined #asahi-alt
<chadmed>
you can change the cpufreq governor but because the system is heterogeneous it just screws with task scheduling and placement
<chadmed>
so its not "supported" and we wont help you with issues
<chadmed>
and 99% of the time youll just end up with worse battery life
<mps>
chadmed: really? what then should be default governor?
<chadmed>
schedutil... hasnt changed in like 3 years....
<mps>
hm, I'm using conservative in hope to prolong battery
n3ph has joined #asahi-alt
<mps>
will change to schedutil to see if there are differences
<runxiyu>
ah, okay
<mps>
(I had 'bad' experiences with schedutil on some other arm machines)
<chadmed>
its fine now with more software knowing how to tell the scheduler about what it wants
<mps>
though schedutil should be lot better with kernel 6.12

<runxiyu>
are there any example kernel configs that are tailored to applie silicon devices? or do i have to go discover the configs from scratch
<chaos_princess>
how do i replicate the problem that that patch fixes, i've run a few random apps inside the 4k vm and they seem to be working fine?

chaos_princess: did steam work for you?
<chadmed>
i installed the amd64 mesa (all the rpms from the latest f40 build) into the fex rootfs but it was no bueno
<chaos_princess>
i have steam working, yes
<chadmed>
hm okay skill issue then
<chaos_princess>
how are you launching it?
<chadmed>
krun FEXBash steam
<chaos_princess>
echo $(which steam)
<chadmed>
. /usr/bin/steam
<chadmed>
does it need to go in the fex rootfs?
<chaos_princess>
you need this specific command: FEXInterpreter /usr/bin/steam -cef-force-occlusion -cef-force-opaque-backgrounds
<chaos_princess>
(inside the krun ofc)
<chadmed>
oh lmfao ofc its cef nonsense

<mixi>
chaos_princess: afair it was just not starting sommelier, which I could trace to a misaligned mmap on the host, and something within mesa on the guest
<mixi>
so if it works for you it's probably not needed (anymore? on your specific setup?)
<mixi>
but since finding the fix was just the result of me finally figuring out the difference between the (working) fedora version and mine, I have no deeper understanding to explain why or under which circumstances it was necessary
<chaos_princess>
I've thrown it in, since it shouldnt hurt, but idk if it does something.
<chaos_princess>
Though i am very annoyed at how that whole setup is developed, having just random copr patches contain critical functionality is not how things are done

<chadmed>
yeah a lot of my ire over the past few days has been mostly related to that
<chadmed>
this whole thing really shits me with how janky and flaky it is. not really up to our usual standards imo
<chaos_princess>
i also really want to kill sommelier specifically and replace it
<chadmed>
unfortunately the alternative is spending years re-architecting the linux memory management code to support multiple page sizes in userspace like xnu
<chaos_princess>
not krun, sommelier
<chadmed>
and yea theres got to be something better to use than sommelier here
<chadmed>
gamescope or weston or something
<chaos_princess>
or a certain crazy thing that i'm writing :P
