<mps> Glanzmann: iirc you told earlier that you got your air too warm when you closed lid and left it for some time. last night issued poweroff command and closed lid but forgot to actually power it down by holdong power button
<mps> in the morning I opened lid and noticed that, but it was not warmer than usual and battery kept machine 'active', display shows where I left it
<Glanzmann> mps: I see, maybe because macbook air has a fan or maybe my fingers were just cold. I had it sitting there for 8 hours or so.
<Glanzmann> sorry yours has a fan and mine hasn't.
<Glanzmann> Anyway soon we have smc and than we won't have that issue any more, IIRC.
<Glanzmann> Because it powers off when we say halt and maybe we can also turn the backlight off when we close the lid.
<mps> heh, would be nice if we could suspend to ram on lid close and resume on open
<mps> Glanzmann: btw, iirc halt cmd is for halting machine and not powerdown. how it works on debian?
<Glanzmann> mps: Same. I type 'halt -p' it shuts the system completely down but than I'm left in a console framebuffer showing me that the system is halted, but I need to manually power-off.
<Glanzmann> Than I press the power button and close the lid, sometimes I forget to press the power button.
<Glanzmann> suspend/resume. Maybe it will come. But I think it will draw almost no power if it is off, and it starts very fast. Once we have smc, we can, if we want, also take u-boot and grub out of the boot chain and chove an extra 10 seconds of the boot time.
<mps> Glanzmann: I like to close lid before bed and be in same environment (terminals, mosh sessions, irc, ....) when I open lid in morning, not to start everything again in morning
<sven> 10 seconds for grub and u-boot sounds like a configuration issue to me
<mps> sven: yes, grub could be set to not use any delay
<mps> and u-boot also could be patched
<_jannau_> properly configured not patched
<mps> and for me boot is not slow, boring part is recreate working ENV every morning
<mps> _jannau_: yes, I mean change .config when build
<mps> CONFIG_BOOTDELAY=2
<_jannau_> although device probing in u-boot is not fast, I guess it would be possible to disable usb for fast nvme boot
<mps> and then lost option to boot from usb for rescue cases?

<matthewayers[m]> Glanzmann: Darn.. well, I’m happy to help with documentation in the meantime if you’d like any help with it.
<j`ey> matthewayers[m]: you can still tethered boot with the proxy using m1n1, or make a payload of m1n1+kernel to do a non-tetherd boot
<Glanzmann> matthewayers[m]: When you do non-tethered boot you won't have internal wifi. That means that you need a wifi or ethernet dongle, if you want networking.
bisko has joined #asahi
<Glanzmann> matthewayers[m]: I think the documentation is at the moment not so bad.
<Glanzmann> matthewayers[m]: I'll redo soon a few videos to make them shorter and smoother.
<matthewayers[m]> I’d likely want to work with a tethered boot for now then. I’ll watch the videos after I have my coffee and we’ll see where that gets me. Thank you both for the info!
<Glanzmann> matthewayers[m]: The videos that I made are all for u-boot.
<Glanzmann> matthewayers[m]: For the tethered boot. If you want a real quickstart: tg.st/u/asahi.txt if you want more background: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Developer-Quickstart-2.0
<Glanzmann> I'll do one video for tethered as well.

<landscape15[m]> Glanzmann: i don’t think these options https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/DesktopKernel#kerneloptions are enough to get most of features. I tried and I get only the keyboard working, while USB doesn’t work (but hotplug works). Do you need something else?

<landscape15[m]> Glanzmann: yeah I’ll test some other options I used for Debian
<landscape15[m]> The strange thing is that the trackpad actually works (since you can press and select), but the cursor doesn’t move.

<Glanzmann> marcan[m]: With the new installer when I try from macos, I always end up in recovery os and not 1tr on the first try. But I'm certain that I press and do not let go of the power button. Am I the only one seeing this?
<Glanzmann> Than of course the installer detect it, I shut down and I'm in reovery os and can continue.
<jannau> that sounds strange but I start the installer only from 1tr
<Glanzmann> jannau: Maybe, I should do the same.
<Glanzmann> I only did it because of my wrong asumption that it no longer works from 1tr. And of course I can also collect the wifi firmware from 1tr.
<Glanzmann> marcan[m]: Today I reinstalled the stub on my wifes notebook. And again got two retries ...
<Glanzmann> But it works for me thanks to your fix.

<landscape15[m]> Glanzmann: I’m using bullseye
<landscape15[m]> mps: latest linux-asahi branch
jeffmiw has joined #asahi
<Glanzmann> landscape15[m]: Did the mouse work for you before?
<Glanzmann> I mean trackpad.
<Glanzmann> landscape15[m]: Because amw is also using bullseye. And I think I had once the trackpad working in bullseye, too. But than I was unable to make the pointer move, buttons worked. So I moved to testing and did not look back.
<Glanzmann> povik: Sound is not working with the jack: https://pbot.rmdir.de/p74IWGNgp5BWB6f-4SPGKw No idea why, everything looks good. Also what I noticed if when I try to change the levels with alsamixer they jump back to different values. But the range there are in I normally hear sound. I reboot and try again.
<landscape15[m]> Glanzmann: mm.. I don’t think it’s that the problem. With the pre compiled kernel I get full working trackpad on bullseye and even on buster (which was the first I tried)
<Glanzmann> povik: I'm running 12.1 stub.
<Glanzmann> landscape15[m]: Do you mean my pre-compiled kernel or another one?
<Glanzmann> landscape15[m]: I see.
<mps> landscape15[m]: did you applied needed patches on top of latest asahi
<Glanzmann> povik: No sound after reboot. Strange.
<Glanzmann> povik: On third reboot I have sound. But I pressed the boot options but selected Linux.
<Glanzmann> povik: Working dmesg: https://pbot.rmdir.de/Rw8QMPuvAvNDWByhccQu4Q
<landscape15[m]> Glanzmann: i mean the one I compiled with the .config (the one you added in the docs)
<landscape15[m]> mps: No i didn’t, I’m trying now, but that patches aren’t for USB support
<Glanzmann> I see. landscape15[m] I thought the DWC3 are about the usb ports, but maybe something else is missing
<landscape15[m]> Yes, there should be something missing, but hotplug works (when I connect my Ethernet dongle I see the led light)
<mps> landscape15[m]: one of patches is for keyboard/trackpad
<Glanzmann> IIRC jannau said you only need it if you compile spi support as module.
<Glanzmann> But I also had issues without the patch.
<landscape15[m]> mps: ok, I’m applying those patches to the kernel, and see if something changes
